Job Overview
Senior Biomedical Scientist responsible for analysing samples to aid in the diagnosis and monitoring of disease processes and drug therapy by applying automated, semi‑automated and manual analytical techniques. Diagnostic tests include examination of blood, cerebrospinal fluid, serum, plasma, urine, faeces, biological fluids and renal and other stones. The post holder leads a team of Specialist Biomedical Scientists, Medical Laboratory Assistants and/or other support workers within a section to deliver a medical laboratory service that achieves efficient patient care and resource management within the Trust.
Responsibilities
* Manage and deploy Biomedical Scientists, MLA and other staff within the section to meet service needs.
* Give first‑line approval for annual leave and manage staff sickness.
* Provide cover for the Clinical Chemistry Operational Manager or other Section Leaders in their absence.
* Ensure high standards of technical and scientific performance and efficiency, initiating improvements and changes in working practice as required.
* Maintain good communication within the section and with other laboratory areas.
* Act as the first point of contact for staff performance and competency issues.
* Support recruitment, selection and induction of staff.
* Ensure adherence to Trust policies within the section.
* Perform appraisal/personal development reviews.
* Maintain skills and knowledge of Health and Safety/Training, stock ordering, rota planning, quality and technical scientific knowledge.
* Teach and develop staff, maintaining high standards and up‑to‑date specialist knowledge.
* Participate in laboratory clinical governance management meetings.
Essential Criteria
* Perform manual, semi‑automated and fully automated laboratory investigations.
* Experience with 24/7 shift work in a Chemistry Laboratory.
* Managed a section and supported troubleshooting of staff and equipment.
* Understand and apply Health and Safety, stock management, training and rota planning.
* Knowledge of Trust policies and HR procedures.
Desirable Criteria
* Additional responsibilities: Health & Safety, stock management, training.
* Experience as a nominated training officer for the laboratory.
* Participated in shift work in Chemistry Automation.
