The Workflow Specialist is a new and distinctive role at BVN. You will float across the practice — embedding temporarily in project teams, observing how those teams actually work, and designing and prototyping improvements to how that work gets done. You are not part of any project's resource allocation, and you are not in the Design Technology department. You sit within EPIC (Embedded Practice Innovation Centre) and report to the Workflow Steering Group.
Your job is to see past what people tell you, and understand what is actually true about how a team operates. You will bring that understanding back to the Steering Group, agree on the highest-value problem to tackle, and then build a better workflow — whether that means writing a Grasshopper script, automating a repetitive process, reordering a sequence of steps, or documenting a clearer handoff protocol. You will then test it with the team and gather real feedback.
Think of this role as catalytic rather than operational. You move through the practice and make things work better — like an enzyme. You are not there to do the work for a team; you are there to understand it, and leave it in better shape.
Role Responsibilities
* Embed in assigned project teams with their knowledge and consent, participating in their work to the extent needed to develop a genuine and complete understanding of how the team operates
* Observe team workflows with rigour and curiosity — distinguishing between commonly-stated frustrations and the friction points that are genuinely affecting team performance
* Synthesise observations and present findings clearly to the Workflow Steering Group, including your own view of what matters most
* Work with the Steering Group to identify and agree on high-value workflow improvements to prototype
* Design and build workflow prototypes — these may be computational (Grasshopper, Python), process-level, or documentation-based depending on the problem
* Test new workflows with the embedded team, gather structured feedback, and iterate
* Identify existing workflows and tools available across the practice that could benefit the teams you work with, and train those teams to use them effectively
* Contribute to the practice-wide workflow knowledge base as it develops
* Coordinate with other Workflow Specialists (via the Steering Group) to avoid duplication and ensure coverage of high-priority areas
Additional Experience
* Proficiency in Grasshopper — essential
* Python programming skills — highly desirable
* Strong written and verbal communication skills
* Demonstrated ability to observe, synthesise and communicate complex information clearly
* Genuine curiosity about how people work and why — an instinct for noticing systems and process
* The social intelligence to integrate quickly into an unfamiliar team and earn trust
* Comfort operating in ambiguous, self-directed situations without a fixed project scope
* An ability to identify high-value problems rather than defaulting to easy or interesting ones
Experience with process mapping, workflow documentation, or computational design in an architecture or built environment context is an advantage. The role is open to candidates from a range of backgrounds — what matters most is how you think, not the specific domain you come from.
Reporting
Reports to the Workflow Steering Group (EPIC). Works closely with the Design Technology team and project teams across the practice, but sits in a separate reporting structure from both.
