Who are we?
The Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH) is a tertiary hospital in southern Tasmania, serving a population of 300,000. RHH is Tasmania's largest hospital and major referral centre. The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery offers services in the major orthopaedic sub‐specialty areas (excluding spinal surgery) and provides opportunities for teaching and research.
The Role
This role has been established to improve the delivery of timely surgical services to trauma patients and to assist in the coordination and training of surgical Resident Medical Officers (RMOs) and Registrars. It is ideal for a surgeon who has recently been awarded Fellowship in Orthopaedic Surgery or will do so prior to commencing employment.
Responsibilities
* Perform approved orthopaedic surgical in‐patient and out‐patient services.
* Participate in consultant after‐hours rosters.
* Provide leadership and mentoring for junior staff, including surgical RMOs and registrars.
* Assist with quality improvement, audit and service improvement within Surgical Services.
Appointment Details
Fixed‐term full‐time day work (with on‐call), working up to 76 hours per fortnight, commencing 27 July 2026 until 26 July 2027.
Salary and Benefits
Medical Practitioners (Public Sector) Award: Base salary ranges from $216,300 (Level 1) to $296,640 (Level 11). Salary increases are available. Additional allowances include:
* Fully maintained private plated motor vehicle (or allowance of $28,389 pro‐rata per annum).
* Continuing Professional Development Allowance of $16,480 pro‐rata per annum.
* Relocation support up to $10,000 (flights, boat, removalist, etc.) and up to 8 weeks accommodation or supported accommodation.
* On‐call allowance as a percentage of base salary.
* Other allowances per current Award.

Essential Requirements
* Holds specialist registration.
* Is a registered medical practitioner on the specialist pathway.
* Has recognised overseas specialist qualification and is assessed as having sufficient experience in the speciality.
Desirable Requirements
* Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in Orthopaedic Surgery or eligibility for fellowship prior to commencement.
* Current driver's licence.
