Offer description

Pilbara Community Engagement Coordinator, First Stories

Founded in 2015 by John and Caroline Wood, Centre for Stories is a vibrant, inclusive literary arts and cultural organisation based in Boorloo/Perth, Western Australia. Centre for Stories uses storytelling to grow skills and confidence, inspire understanding and promote community cohesion. Through oral storytelling, writing programs and community events, we support diverse voices and strengthen community connection.

First Stories is a storytelling and story‐listening project run in partnership between Centre for Stories, First Nations and culturally and linguistically diverse (CaLD) communities across Western Australia to build lasting relationships, storytelling skills and healing. Through oral storytelling and writing workshops, First Stories aims to empower participants to share their stories through publications, digital resources and live events.

The Role

We are seeking a confident, passionate First Nations storyteller embedded within their community and living in the Pilbara region. The role is a part‐time, fixed‐term contract working 2 days per week for a period of 6 months from the agreed start date. In this position, you will report to and work closely with the Boorloo/Perth‐based team, including the Project Manager, to ensure community organisations, youth and elders are aware of our programs and can participate in planning and implementation of trainings and events.

Key Responsibilities

* Participate in the Centre for Stories storytelling training and prepare a short oral story yourself, becoming familiar and confident with our methodology (likely online).
* Identify and meet with Aboriginal‐led and other community groups in the Pilbara to explore potential collaborations.
* Consult with Elders, youth and other key individuals to share information about First Stories and learn about existing storytelling activities.
* Formalise partnership agreements with interested Aboriginal‐led organisations for storytelling workshops, train‐the‐trainer sessions and events.
* Find and book venues and catering for workshops, trainings and events, working within budget directions and managing invoicing.
* Co‐facilitate storytelling workshops with the support of the Centre for Stories team, as your schedule allows.
* Support the logistics and accessibility of workshops (e.g. arranging transport, calling participants, arranging taxi vouchers).
* Coordinate with local trainers and facilitators to ensure activities are co‐facilitated by community members.
* Ensure all evaluation and financial materials are distributed, collected, scanned and uploaded to support participant payment and feedback collection.
* Support and organise recordings of stories or written stories for publication, including managing logistics of recording and collecting author agreements.

Qualifications and Preferences

* Strong connections to First Nations people in the community you live in, with the ability to tap into various local networks.
* Passion for storytelling and the arts, preferably with experience in arts program delivery.
* Strong administrative and organisation skills and familiarity with Microsoft Outlook and other Microsoft Office programs; ability to request and send invoices and general computer literacy.
* Confident working remotely and using video‐calling software; reliable internet, printer and/or scanner.
* Experience working within a team and meeting project timelines, while also working independently on tasks.
* Strong interpersonal skills and confidence communicating with First Nations people, with a preference for those who have workshop facilitation or public‐speaking experience.
* All applicants must hold a valid driver's licence, a Working with Children Check and a valid Australian work visa or equivalent work authorisation.

How to Apply

Application closing date is 5.00 pm AWST on 24th of May 2026.

Submit your application via Seek, including:

* A written response to each selection criterion (no more than two pages).
* A CV with two current references (no more than two pages).

Successful candidates will be invited for interviews on 25‐29th of May. The position start date will commence on 1st of June 2026.

Equal Opportunity Statement

Centre for Stories encourages and welcomes applications from people with disabilities, the LGBTQI+ communities, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
