Position Purpose
The Head of Underwriting is responsible for leading the underwriting function to deliver high-quality credit outcomes, strong operational performance, and an efficient end-to-end customer experience. The role owns underwriting workflow management, service level performance, and team capability across credit assessment.
As the senior subject matter expert for credit decisioning, the Head of Underwriting provides leadership on complex transactions, risk appetite application, and credit quality standards while fostering a high-performance culture focused on accountability, consistency, and continuous improvement.
The role is accountable for balancing speed-to-yes and speed-to-funding with disciplined risk management, operational excellence, and positive customer and broker outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
Credit Outcomes, Queue Management and SLA Performance
* Own underwriting throughput, turnaround times, and service levels across all channels and products.
* Actively manage the deal queue to ensure optimal prioritisation across underwriting with minimal rework, handoffs, or bottlenecks.
* Set, monitor, and drive adherence to SLAs for credit decisioning.
* Balance speed-to-yes with disciplined risk outcomes and strong customer experience.
* Establish clear operating rhythms, dashboards, and performance management cadences across the function.
* Monitor pipeline flow, workload allocation, escalation management, and operational capacity planning.
* Identify workflow inefficiencies and implement process improvements to improve turnaround times and decision consistency.
Underwriting Leadership and Subject Matter Expertise
* Act as the senior underwriting authority and subject matter expert for complex credit applications, policy interpretation, and deal structuring.
* Provide guidance and oversight on higher-risk, escalated, or exception-based applications.
* Ensure consistent application of credit policy, responsible lending obligations, and risk appetite across the underwriting team.
* Partner with the Chief Credit Officer to continuously refine credit policy, lending parameters, and decisioning frameworks.
* Provide insights and recommendations on emerging risks, portfolio trends, and market developments.
People Leadership and Capability Development
* Lead, coach, and develop the underwriting team to drive high performance, accountability, and engagement.
* Build team capability through structured coaching, technical development, quality reviews, and performance feedback.
* Foster a customer-centric and commercially balanced culture focused on responsiveness, collaboration, and quality outcomes.
* Establish clear expectations, performance standards, and development pathways across the team.
Stakeholder Management
* Act as a key escalation point for BDMs, Relationship Managers, brokers, and internal stakeholders regarding credit decisions, policy interpretation, and operational priorities.
* Partner closely with Sales, Settlements, Operations, Collections, and Risk teams to deliver a seamless end-to-end customer journey.
* Build strong internal relationships to improve communication, alignment, and execution across the lending lifecycle.
