The team
The Information & Data Law team is responsible for managing ASIC's obligations under the Freedom of Information Act 1982 (FOI Act) and Privacy Act 1988. The team sits within the Corporate Legal Services business unit in the Legal Services Group which advises on corporate, commercial legal and governance matters relevant to ASIC's functions and operations.
The role
As Senior Lawyer in the Information & Data Law team, you provide expert legal and privacy advice, lead privacy impact assessments, support technology projects with privacy-by-design solutions, respond to privacy incidents, and mentor junior team members to ensure ASIC's compliance and effective team performance.
* Deliver expert legal and privacy advice on complex information and data law matters.
* Lead and coordinate privacy impact assessments, incident responses, and privacy assurance activities.
* Advise on the use, sharing, and disclosure of ASIC information under relevant laws.
* Embed privacy‑by‑design solutions in technology and data projects.
* Monitor and interpret privacy reforms and legislative changes.
* Mentor, guide, and supervise junior team members to ensure high‑quality outcomes.
* Prepare internal reports and briefings on privacy‑related issues.
* Build and lead an effective team, fostering professional development and strong performance.
* Recommend system improvements to optimise long‑term results.
Technical Requirements & Certifications
* Hold legal qualifications and be eligible for an Unrestricted Legal Practicing Certificate in a State or Territory of Australia.
* Minimum 6+ years post‑admission experience (PAE) as a lawyer, with relevant expertise in government, in‑house, or law firm settings.
* Demonstrated understanding of the law, including the Corporations Act, ASIC Act, financial services legislation, FOI Act, Privacy Act, and related policies.
* Experience in governance and compliance is highly desirable.
