Senior Technical Officer, Civil Engineering
This role supports the Structural Engineering Lab on a 12‑month fixed‑term basis. It offers variety, autonomy, and the chance to contribute to teaching and research outcomes. Suitable for early‑career tradespeople or experienced professionals seeking engaging, low‑stress work.
Responsibilities
* Support teaching and research activities by providing technical expertise and training on equipment and engineering software.
* Develop and implement practical technical solutions to support School operations and initiatives.
* Maintain laboratory equipment to a high standard, including minor repairs and coordination of servicing/calibration.
* Assist with laboratory‑based teaching, student projects (including HDR and capstone), and research activities.
* Contribute to outreach, industry engagement, and cross‑school collaboration.
* Ensure compliance with OHS and risk management requirements.
Typical Week
* Construct or modify experimental equipment and source materials.
* Prepare and support practical student experiments.
* Develop safety documentation and ensure safe work practices.
* Support student research projects (e.g. materials testing such as concrete with alternative aggregates).
Qualifications
* Extensive experience and specialist knowledge, or broad knowledge in technical or related fields.
* Equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training, including experience in a concrete production and testing environment, or steel or timber fabrication and testing environments. Understanding of structural testing techniques and equipment would be beneficial.
* Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and effectively with a range of internal and external stakeholders, clients and/or students.
* A Degree in Civil/Structural Engineering with subsequent relevant experience, or equivalent practical/trade‑based experience in a related field.
