Port Hedland
Department of Education, Western Australia
Posted: 3 June
Offer description

This is a permanent full‑time position commencing Term 3, 2026.

Hedland Senior High School (SHS), located in the Pilbara, is an Independent Public‑School catering for students from Year 7 to Year 12. Our school prides itself on a system of positive behaviour supports focused on care, courtesy, respect, and responsibility. These values underpin our philosophy at Hedland SHS and guide a culture that encourages high standards of behaviour, performance, and inclusive support for all students and staff.

Role

Hedland SHS seeks a dynamic, highly competent, and enthusiastic Head of Learning Area (HoLA) of the Health and Physical Education (HPE) learning area. Applicants with an excellent knowledge of the Western Australian Health Education, Physical Education and Outdoor Education curriculum, with the experience and ability to teach courses across Years 7 to 12 are encouraged to apply.

As the HoLA, you will continue to build and develop the HPE learning area, modelling a culture of high‑quality teaching and learning. The successful applicant is a highly effective interpersonal leader with expertise in curriculum development, collaborating with staff, students, carers and community to implement data‑informed learning programs and create innovative opportunities to support student engagement, learning and achievement. As an integral member of the senior leadership team, you should display commitment towards whole school planning and review processes that positively impact the school’s directions.

The learning area is a popular choice in Senior School, and you will oversee planning, development and implementation of School and Curriculum Standards Authority Courses, Vocational Education and Training Programs and Endorsed Programs, as applicable. You will ensure all staff are suitably qualified and re‑qualified according to course and learning needs.

The successful applicant will ideally have a proven track record of creating a cohesive and strong team that is dedicated to building on one another’s strengths to improve outcomes for all and is a collegiate part of a wider school community. The HoLA HPE operates with high standards of professionalism, promoting integrity, fairness, transparency, trust and collaboration, with a focus toward ongoing capacity building and shared responsibility within the team. As an expert practitioner, you will manage and monitor operations and administrative systems, strategically manage staff resources and scheduling to optimise our professional capacity. The HPE learning area leads a range of whole‑school extracurricular opportunities for students, and the HoLA requires strong financial management skills to ensure students’ needs are at the centre of all decision making.
