Join a growing team with a genuine global impact in stopping the spread of weapons of mass destruction.
The Australian Safeguards and Non-Proliferation Office (ASNO) is a respected voice in global non-proliferation. As a specialist office within the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, we are Australia's national authority for non-proliferation treaties and the domestic regulator responsible for their implementation.
Australia's safeguards system is one of the most trusted in the world — and it depends on people who bring rigour, curiosity and commitment to work that genuinely matters. In these roles, you will contribute to the inspections, regulatory decisions and international engagement that keeps Australia's non-proliferation commitments credible and effective.
The Opportunity
We are recruiting at both the APS 5 (Safeguards Officer) and APS 6 (Senior Safeguards Officer) levels. Both roles sit at the heart of Australia's nuclear non-proliferation system, contributing to domestic inspections, IAEA engagement, regulatory compliance and cross-government coordination. The difference is one of responsibility and independence — APS 6 officers lead and provide technical advice with greater autonomy, while APS 5 officers contribute to defined activities under guidance.
No prior safeguards experience is required. ASNO provides comprehensive training and real-world exposure — including travel to nuclear facilities across Australia and participation in international verification activities — to build your expertise from the ground up.
The Role
Your key duties may include:
*
o Supporting inspections of nuclear material, facilities and related activities, including IAEA inspections
o Preparing briefs, talking points and correspondence on safeguards policy and regulatory matters
o Contributing to or coordinating regulatory compliance activities and assessments under Australian safeguards legislation
o Engaging with domestic and international partners, including the International Atomic Energy Agency
o Supporting or leading technical analysis, research and whole-of-government coordination
Our Ideal Candidate
At ASNO, we value people who are motivated by purpose, thrive in a highly specialised environment, and bring curiosity to complex and evolving challenges. We are committed to fostering an inclusive, respectful and high-performing workplace and support staff through ongoing learning and development opportunities.
You will also have the following skills and capabilities:
*
o Experience supporting or coordinating policy, regulatory, inspection or compliance activities in a government or research environment
o Strong written and verbal communication skills, including preparing clear briefs and records for defined audiences
o Sound judgement, attention to detail and the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines
o Professional engagement skills when working with government, industry and international partners
o Qualifications in science, engineering or a related discipline are highly regarded, along with an interest in nuclear safeguards, verification or non-proliferation and a willingness to build technical expertise over time.
We recognise that candidates may not meet every capability listed and encourage applications from people who can demonstrate transferable skills, potential and a willingness to learn.
