The Royal Hobart Hospital and Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is seeking interest from suitably qualified and experienced applicants for a Staff Specialist – Orthopaedic Surgeon vacancy.

The Role

This role has been established to fulfil several targeted activities aimed to improve the delivery of timely surgical services to trauma patients and assist in the coordination and training of surgical Resident Medical Officers (RMOs) and Registrars. It is ideally suited to a surgeon who has recently been awarded Fellowship in Orthopaedic Surgery or will do so prior to the commencement of employment.

* Undertaking of approved Orthopaedic surgical in-patient and out-patient services
* Participation in Consultant after-hours rosters
* Provision of leadership and mentoring for junior staff, including surgical RMOs and registrars
* Assisting with quality improvement, audit and service improvement within Surgical Services
* Access to independent trauma operating sessions, most sessions concurrent with an existing consultant operating session in an adjacent theatre
* Outpatient clinic sessions with a trauma review focus and additional consultant support

Salary and Allowances

Medical Practitioners (Public Sector) Award - Base salary points range for Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1 at $216,300 through to Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 11 at $296,640. Further salary increments are available. Access to the Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner salary range $300,216 – $310,389 is subject to meeting the criteria for Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1, 2 or 3 as outlined in the Award.

Additional allowances:

* Provision of a fully maintained private plated motor vehicle (subject to working full time hours) or allowance in lieu of motor vehicle set at $28,389 pro rata per annum, paid fortnightly (with CPI indexation on 1 July each year)
* Continuing Professional Development Allowance of $16,480 pro rata per annum
* Relocation support up to $10,000 (flights, boat, removalist, etc.) and up to 8 weeks accommodation or supported accommodation
* On‐call allowance as a percentage of Base Salary
* Other allowances as per current Award
* Subject to approval from the Private Patient Scheme Committee (PPS) a 35% of Base salary plus on‐call, pro rata additional payment may be paid from PPS; if not admitted to PPS, a 35% in lieu of PPS of base salary will be paid

Appointment Details

Fixed term full‐time day work (with on‐call) working up to 76 hours per fortnight, commencing 27 July 2026 until 26 July 2027.

Note: For a period of twelve months from the date of publication, this selection process may be used to fill subsequent or similar full time, part time and casual vacancies.

Essential Requirements

* Holds specialist registration
* Registered Medical Practitioner who is an International Medical Graduate (IMG) on the specialist pathway
* Registered Medical Practitioner who is an International Medical Graduate (IMG) with a recognised overseas specialist qualification and assessed as having sufficient experience in the speciality

Desirable Requirements

* Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in Orthopaedic Surgery or eligibility for Fellowship prior to commencement
* Current Driver's Licence
