# Student Counsellor at TasTAFEby | Apr 13, 2026**TasTAFE**OVERVIEW The Student Counsellor role at TasTAFE supports prospective and current students to achieve their educational and vocational goals through high-quality counselling and advocacy services. Based in Hobart, this part-time, fixed-term position works within a supportive team while exercising a high degree of professional autonomy. The role contributes directly to student wellbeing, positive learning experiences, and continuous improvement across the organisation. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES – Provide personal, career and crisis counselling services to prospective and current students – Minimise the impact of psychological, emotional or social factors on student learning outcomes – Support students to achieve their educational and vocational goals – Partner with teachers and student support teams to advocate for student wellbeing – Resolve conflict and support positive learning experiences – Work autonomously within a supportive and experienced team environment – Contribute insights on emerging student issues and trends – Inform service improvement across the organisation through professional input REQUIREMENTS – Proven capability in counselling, career guidance, mediation and student advocacy – Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a sensitive and professional approach – Demonstrated experience supporting individuals experiencing psychological or emotional distress – Sound judgement, resilience and the ability to manage competing priorities impartially – Well-developed problem-solving, negotiation and conflict resolution skills – Experience in vocational education and training environments (desirable) – A relevant qualification in Counselling, Social Work, Psychology or a related discipline (desirable) – A current Working with Vulnerable People registration, or the ability to obtain prior to commencement – The right to work in Australia WHY THIS ROLE MATTERS Student counsellors play a critical role in enabling access, retention and success in education by addressing non-academic barriers to learning. In a vocational education context, effective counselling directly supports workforce participation and skills development aligned with industry needs. This role also strengthens institutional capacity by identifying emerging student trends and contributing to responsive, inclusive support services.
