About our client
Our client is delivering a large-scale, mission-critical infrastructure transformation programme of national significance, focused on modernising core platforms within a highly secure and regulated environment.
At the heart of this programme is a greenfield storage transformation, underpinning a next-generation environment that will support critical systems, high-performance workloads and secure data operations across multiple data centres.
This is a multi-petabyte, dual-site architecture, requiring careful design across performance, resilience, scalability and compliance. The programme includes the transition from legacy storage platforms into a modern Storage Spaces Direct (S2D) environment, alongside enterprise backup, replication and disaster recovery capabilities.
Operating within a Defence-aligned environment, storage is a critical foundation — ensuring data integrity, availability and security across systems that directly support national capability. As such, architecture decisions in this space carry significant operational and long-term impact.
About the role
You will act as the design authority for storage architecture, taking ownership of one of the most critical pillars of the programme.
This is a highly strategic, hands‐on architecture role, where you will define the target state and guide delivery across a complex, high-performance environment.
Key responsibilities
* Design and define Storage Spaces Direct (S2D) architecture, including fault domains, tiering, resilience and scaling strategy
* Lead storage migration pathway decisions (vSAN to S2D, NFS replatforming, backup/restore approaches)
* Architect enterprise backup and recovery solutions (Veritas NetBackup or equivalent), including retention, deduplication and recovery strategy
* Perform performance modelling and capacity planning, ensuring environments meet IOPS, latency and throughput requirements
* Define replication, disaster recovery and high availability strategies across multiple data centre sites
* Ensure alignment with security and compliance frameworks, including encryption and data governance requirements
* Act as a key technical authority across the programme, working closely with architects, engineers and programme leadership
* Provide oversight and validation to ensure designs are implemented correctly and remain fit for purpose at scale
This role sits at the core of programme design, with significant influence over both technical outcomes and long-term platform capability.
The successful candidate
You are a senior storage architect with deep expertise in designing and delivering large-scale, high-performance storage environments, ideally within secure or regulated domains.
* 10+ years experience across enterprise storage architecture and infrastructure design
* Deep expertise in Storage Spaces Direct (S2D), vSAN and enterprise storage platforms
* Strong background in backup and recovery design (Veritas highly regarded)
* Proven capability in performance modelling (IOPS, latency, throughput) and capacity planning
* Experience delivering multi-petabyte or large-scale storage environments
* Ability to operate as a design authority, influencing stakeholders and guiding technical direction
* Strong communication skills, able to translate complex design decisions into clear outcomes
Mandatory requirement
* NV2 clearance preferred, OR NV1 with NV2 actively in progress (non-negotiable)
What is on offer
* $170,000 + super + performance bonus
* Opportunity to act as design authority on one of the most significant storage transformations currently underway in Australia
* Work on a mission-critical programme where storage underpins system performance, resilience and security
* True greenfield environment, offering the chance to shape architecture from the ground up
* Long-term engagement (initial 2-year programme with strong extension potential)
* Melbourne or Adelaide preferred, with flexibility depending on experience
* Work alongside top-tier architects and engineering teams in a high-performance delivery environment
