The Church
Chinese and Australian Baptist Church – Thornleigh (CABCT) is a multi-congregational Baptist church in Thornleigh NSW, with English, Cantonese, and Mandarin congregations. Each congregation holds its own worship services, while together we encourage and pursue the glory of God and the growth of His people.
The English congregation is a vibrant and growing community of around 100 people, with most members born in Australia. Our age demographic skews younger, with a median age in the early to mid-20s.
In recent years, we have also seen encouraging growth among young families, with around 10 families with children under five.
The Role
Position Title: Part-Time Pastor or Student Pastor (English Congregation)
Hours: 16–24 hours per week, with flexibility depending on availability
Term: Initial two-year contract, with pathway to a permanent role
Remuneration: In line with Baptist Association of NSW & ACT guidelines
This role exists to share in the pastoral care, discipleship, and teaching ministries of the English congregation, working closely with the existing full-time English Pastor and the wider pastoral team.
Key Responsibilities
The responsibilities below reflect the shared ministry of the English pastoral team. This role is not expected to carry these areas independently, but to share in them alongside the Full-Time English Pastor.
The specific responsibilities and level of involvement will be shaped according to experience, gifts, availability, and areas of passion, with appropriate support provided.
Pastoral Care
* Sharing in the pastoral care of the English congregation
* Visiting, discipling, and nurturing individuals and families
Preaching and Teaching
* Preaching approximately once or twice per month
* Contributing to sermon planning and teaching direction
Youth Ministry (Ages 12–18)
* Helping lead a youth group of approximately 20 youth
* Working alongside a team of volunteer leaders
* Contributing to leadership development, discipleship, and pastoral oversight
Young Adults Ministry
* Helping lead and pastor approximately 20 university-aged young adults
* Leading Bible studies and occasional social gatherings
* Co-ordinating and working with a team of volunteer leaders
Small Group Ministry
* Sharing the oversight of seven small groups within the English congregation
* Encouraging, supporting, and developing small group leaders
* Helping cultivate a healthy culture of community and discipleship
The role is designed to be flexible and collaborative, allowing the successful applicant to grow in areas of strength while being supported in areas of development.

* Is willing to serve within a team context
* Is comfortable ministering within an ethnically Chinese church context, while serving primarily in an Australian Birth English-speaking congregation
* Values cooperation across congregations and leadership structures
Qualifications
* Completed or currently completing a relevant Bible college degree
* Valid Working With Children Check
* Police Check (or willingness to obtain one)
This role is open to both experienced pastors and those currently studying for pastoral ministry. For less experienced candidates, we are open to shaping the role to allow broad ministry exposure and development.
