Indigenous Student Support Officer (Identified)

you will:

- foster empowerment and independence to indigenous students undertaking studies through the enhancement of their existing study skills and/or abilities;
- provide a program of support and consultation on academic, personal and career matters to ensure increased participation rate and successful outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in TAFE Courses; and
- contribute to supporting the achievement of TAFE Queensland Stretch Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) 2025.

This position reports to the Team Leader, Student Support.

This is aTemporaryFull-Timeopportunity, for a period of 12 months unless otherwise determined.

The position will be based primarily at the Nambour Campushowever you may be required to perform work at other TAFE Queensland campuses.

Key Responsibilities

- Contribute to the success of transformation and cultural change through promoting and modelling the established values of Safety First, Working Together, Showing Initiative, Focussing on our Customer and Taking Responsibility.
- Live a safety culture, lead by example and support the Health, Safety and Environment Management System to create a TAFE Queensland wide safety culture.
- Provide appropriate support, consultation and referral for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students on academic, personal and career matters.
- Collaborate as needed with relevant government agencies and community organisations to support student access and outcomes.
- Assist Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to enrol into TAFE Queensland courses and provide advice and assistance with ABSTUDY applications and liaison with Job Service Agencies.
- Act as a link between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and other regional staff, including teaching staff.
- Participate in student and staff orientations.
- Initiate and be involved in staff development activities including cultural capability training.
- Liaise with School Community Education Counsellors and community organisations and provide information sessions to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people about training opportunities at TAFE Queensland and arrange study visits to the organisation.
- Monitor; track and report on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander enrolment; participation and completion rates.
- Contribute to the achievement of TAFE Queensland’s quality policies by encouraging an environment where high quality work is achieved and is supported by the adherence/development of quality system documentation.
- Update and maintain knowledge of TAFE Queensland’s services, products and policies and use this knowledge base to make informed, consistent decisions in the delivery and/or referral of services.
- Undertake research and development on matters relating to business functions.
- Ensure day to day activities align with business operations.
- Contribute to improvements in business processes and practices.

How you will be assessed

The ideal applicant will be someone who has the following key capabilities:

- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and societies.
- Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills as evidenced by the ability to communicate effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in a variety of contexts (including within their particular family/clan/kinship systems) and to liaise with educators and a broad range of representatives from community and government.
- Ability to provide advice and guidance to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students on academic, personal and career matters to promote successful outcomes.
- Possess ability to enhance relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and staff and TAFE Queensland by providing advice on sensitive cultural matters and initiating staff development on cross cultural issues and the facilitation of awareness programs in a variety of forms.
- Displays the initiative, attitude and ability to thrive in a dynamic, challenging and changing environment.

Mandatory Requirements

Highly Desirable Requirements

- Prior Student Support or similar experience would advantageous.
- Certificate III / IV or Diploma in Community Services or similar or willingness to obtain qualifications is highly regarded.
- Possession of a degree in Educational Psychology, Psychology or Social Work or other relevant degree qualification(s) from a recognised tertiary institution.
