* Salary: $115,000 - $125,000 + salary packaging + super + 5 weeks annual leave
About the role
The Legal Counsel will support the Peter Mac Legal Office by providing professional legal services and advice to the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. The role focuses on research contracts, commercial contracts, medico‑legal advice and privacy matters, delivering legal services through efficient negotiation, execution and contract management.
About you
The successful applicant will be a qualified legal practitioner with at least 1–2 years’ experience as a commercial and contracts lawyer, having worked either in‑house or in a medium‑to‑large law firm.
Key Responsibilities
* Facilitate negotiation and execution of research and commercial agreements, managing contracts to completion.
* Provide timely, practical legal advice to internal stakeholders.
* Draft, review and advise on agreements, instruments and legal documents related to research, clinical trials, intellectual property, medico‑legal matters, FOI, education and technology.
* Conduct legal research and interpret legislation for compliance.
* Maintain relationships with key Peter Mac and third‑party stakeholders and support the General Counsel with strategic initiatives.
* Ensure compliance with privacy requirements and maintain confidentiality.
* Manage CPD requirements and support policy and procedure development.
Qualifications & Skills
* Admitted as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of Victoria with an unrestricted practising certificate.
* Excellent organisational skills with the ability to manage conflicting priorities.
* Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines while maintaining accuracy.
* Initiative and willingness to take on new challenges.
* Exceptional verbal and written communication, influencing and negotiation skills.
* Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Adobe Reader, Outlook).
* Knowledge or interest in intellectual property, health law (privacy, FOI, consent, grant funding) and related legislation.
