The position contributes to the improvement of work health and safety outcomes in the mining, quarrying and processing industries by developing and leading sector wide work health and safety initiatives, and undertaking regulatory functions in these complex and high-risk environments.

Hours per fortnight

73.50 hours per fortnight- flexible options available.


Duties

* Develop and implement sector-wide strategies, systems and programs that will lead to improvements in work health and safety outcomes for the high-risk mining, quarrying and mineral processing industries.
* Provide professional expertise into the development and implementation objectives, initiatives, and solutions for mining, quarrying and mineral processing work health and safety in Tasmania.
* Provide specialist professional advice within WorkSafe Tasmania and to industry on mining and mineral processing safety, and operational issues.
* Develop and maintain relationships with internal and external clients and stakeholders, industry bodies, local, state and commonwealth departments and other national organisations.
* Monitor workplace compliance within the aligned and adopted Tasmanian legislative frameworks administered by WorkSafe Tasmania. Provide professional specialist and technical advice on workplace issues internally and externally.
* Investigate workplace incidents and accidents including fatalities and investigate and manage workplace complaints, providing reports for prosecution, the coroner, and internally within agreed timeframes. Inspect and audit sites as required to achieve the Departmental outcomes.
* Represent the Department and the Government professionally at a state level on a range of committees and at conferences as required.
* Provide specialist training and mentoring of less qualified and experienced staff.
* Maintain a high-level understanding of relevant contemporary mining related safety issues through ongoing research and training.
* Act in the capacity of the Principal Mining Inspector as required.
* A bachelor's degree in engineering specifically in mining engineering, from a recognised university, eligible to become a professional engineer recognized by Engineers Australia.
* Recent mining engineering experience of around 5 year's duration, preferably with experience in hard rock metalliferous operations in geotechnically challenging environments.
* Mineral processing and metallurgical experience.

* Pre-employment (National Police Record) checks for:Arson and fire setting, violent crimes and crimes against the person,sex-related offences,drug and alcohol related offences,crimes involving dishonesty, deception and/or conspiracy, making false declarations,malicious damage and destruction to property,serious traffic offences,crimes against public order or relating to the Administration of Law and Justice, Executive or the Legislative Power.
* Disciplinary action in previous employment.
