Position Tagline
To provide Emergency Medicine services to patients who present to Canterbury Hospital under supervision to ensure quality health care for the local community, while developing expertise in a complex clinical environment.
Location & Hospital Overview
Canterbury Hospital is a 215‐bed metropolitan acute general hospital serving a culturally and linguistically diverse community of 220,000 people in the Canterbury area of Sydney. The region has a high proportion of immigrants, many with limited English proficiency, and a significant refugee population. The hospital offers services in Emergency Medicine, General Surgery and Medicine, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Aged Care, Rehabilitation, and Palliative Care.
Responsibilities
* Taking a leadership role in coordinating the admission, assessment, management, and discharge planning of patients.
* Having direct clinical involvement in the care of all patients, including the critically ill.
* Providing clinical supervision to junior medical staff.
* Providing overall medical management and support for the Emergency Department in conjunction with senior nursing staff.
* Communicating assessment and management decisions to other staff involved in the patient's care.
* Communicating with the patient/family regarding the patient's condition and management plans.
* Coordinating diagnostic tests and consultations with other medical specialists.
* Arranging the patient discharge process and liaising with local medical officers and community‐based care modalities for optimal post‐discharge care.
* Being actively involved in teaching, research and quality programs.
* Role‐modeling leadership within the Emergency Department.
Qualifications & Experience
* Qualifications and experience commensurate with the Essential Requirements for the role.
* A minimum of four (4) full years of postgraduate general hospital experience including 2 years emergency medicine experience in an Australian Emergency Department or equivalent. Application for ACEM Selection into Fellowship Training is in progress or confirmed.
* Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within multi‐disciplinary teams, sharing information with key persons or services.
* Advanced ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilising excellent clinical skills, judgment and expertise.
* Advanced verbal, written and interpersonal skills, with the capacity to vary communication style to meet the needs of diverse audiences.
* Advanced ability to prioritise workloads and display a flexible approach to meet changing situations in a demanding and unpredictable clinical environment.
* Commitment to participating in training and development opportunities to further develop skills and knowledge in emergency medicine.
* Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
