ASPI was established by the Australian Government in 2001. It is partially funded by the Department of Defence and receives funding from a variety of sources including sponsorship, research and project support from governments, industry and civil society. In 2022, ASPI opened an office in Washington DC to provide authoritative Australian perspectives on global strategic issues including the challenges and opportunities facing the Alliance, AUKUS and the Indo-Pacific.

About the role
ASPI is seeking a junior subeditor for The Strategist, the leading Australian commentary and analysis website for national security.
We are looking for a person who has excellent attention to detail and a solid understanding of Australian defence, security and foreign policy.
Experience in editing is preferred but not essential. Writing skill is more important. The position could particularly suit a new graduate. Training will be provided.
You will work among colleagues who are passionate about defence, security and foreign policy and are dedicated to producing and communicating original ideas that provoke healthy policy debate.
You will work in a small team in choosing from a large volume of submissions, editing articles, publishing them. The successful candidate will also help create ideas for articles and to improve the service offered to readers. You will report to the editor of The Strategist.
Duty Statement:
The junior subeditor is responsible for:
· Assisting the editor in selecting suitable articles for The Strategist from a large flow of submissions.
· Editing articles, using keen judgement for accuracy, insight, relevance and style, and preparing them for publication and uploading them in Wordpress.
· Working with ASPI staff and external contributors to commission and prepare articles.
· Writing analysis, commentary and news as time permits.
Eligibility
Essential Criteria:
· Strong writing skills with excellent English expression and grammar.
· A clear understanding of the structure and style of commentary and analysis articles.
· Commitment to factual accuracy, fairness, and balance.
· Initiative and ability to work with minimal supervision.
· Strong organisational skills and ability to prioritise.
· Sound knowledge of, or strong interest in, defence, national security and foreign policy.
· An ability to think critically, engage with debates and generate ideas for articles.
Desirable Qualifications:
* Previous experience in a similar role
* Strong familiarity with Australia's national security landscape
Remuneration will be competitive and commensurate with experience.
