Base Salary: A$121,508.00 – A$137,032.00 per annum (HEO8) plus 17% superannuation.
About the opportunity
The University of Sydney is welcoming applications for an experienced and motivated Senior Staff Engineering, Chemical Engineering to join the Central Operations Services (COS): Engineering Delivery Team and provide effective delivery of technical services within the designated area of responsibility, to achieve enhanced education/research support outcomes.
Reporting to the Technical Services Manager, the Senior Staff Engineering, Chemical Engineering is responsible for leading and coordinating technical operations and staff within the designated area to deliver high‑quality support for teaching and research activities. The role provides expert technical advice, guidance, and hands‑on support to researchers and students, working collaboratively with academic staff to enable successful research and learning outcomes.
The Senior Staff Engineering, Chemical Engineering will lead the implementation of improved processes, systems, and work practices that enhance service delivery, operational efficiency, and resource utilisation. The position also contributes to the training and development of staff, ensuring the smooth day‑to‑day operation of teaching laboratories and compliance with all relevant Work Health and Safety (WHS) standards, University policies, and legislation.
The Senior Staff Engineering, Chemical Engineering oversees the professional growth of the technical team, fostering a culture of continuous improvement, collaboration, and excellence. This includes mentoring and coaching team members, supporting technical and professional skill development, and ensuring the delivery of high‑quality services aligned with local and strategic University objectives.
Key responsibilities
* Manage the procurement, installation, maintenance, calibrations, certification, and disposal of equipment and instrumentation related to the Technical Area, ensuring a clean and safe state and compliance with university and legislative requirements.
* Collaborate with other Senior Staff Engineers and Senior Technical Officers to identify and act upon opportunities for knowledge share and to develop consistent workflows, while ensuring research and teaching priorities are managed effectively.
* Provide sound, strategic advice and support to the development and implementation of the ongoing teaching strategy for the technical area, in alignment with TSS overall objectives.
* Assess the requirements of future teaching/research activities and incorporate them into resource planning, including contingency planning for unexpected demand.
* Ensure Technical Area procedures for data management (including archiving) are in accordance with University policy and are implemented and used appropriately.
* Proactively lead technical staff and users of all levels in best practices and awareness of University policies and relevant WHS/compliance legislation, standards, codes, policies, guidelines, and local provisions.
* Lead a high‑performing, adaptable team, efficiently managing workload levels to support effective delivery of work activity.
About you
* Tertiary qualifications in chemical engineering, chemistry, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
* Valid Working With Children Check (WWCC) or willingness to obtain one.
* Full strength and range of movement in both arms and flexible joints to lift, carry, push, pull a variety of loads; ability to manipulate items and tolerate repetitive work tasks.
* Demonstrated knowledge of laboratory and safety procedures, including handling chemicals and hazardous substances, appropriate disposal of waste, and appropriate glassware and wafer cleaning techniques.
* Ability to work independently and as part of a team, taking initiative and exercising sound judgement in resolving matters that arise as part of normal daily work.
* Working understanding of relevant aspects of the Work Health and Safety Policy and relevant legislation, including Safe Laboratory Practices as applicable to the work environment.
* Relevant and extensive experience in providing support, training and maintenance of equipment in this technical discipline, including routine maintenance and engaging external parties to repair equipment.
* Relevant experience in introducing policies and procedures on efficient operational performance and compliance in a technical space of this discipline.
