OVERVIEW OF THE ROLE
The Senior Photographer plays a key leadership role within the Imaging Services team at the National Gallery of Australia. This position is responsible for overseeing the technical and creative standards of the studio, implementing robust colour management workflows, and ensuring the delivery of exceptional publication-quality images of works of art.
In addition to producing high-quality imaging outputs, this role manages the day-to-day operations of the
photography studio, including equipment and software procurement, workflow standardisation, collection
administration including movement requests and supervision of the Gallery's Studio Photographer. The Senior Photographer will ensure the Imaging Services team's work aligns with the Gallery's strategic objectives and supports internal and external stakeholders.
This is a full-time, ongoing employment opportunity.
The key duties of the position include:
DUTY STATEMENT
* Manage the daily operations of the photographic studio, ensuring efficient workflows and high-quality imaging outcomes.
* Implement, maintain and oversee studio-wide colour management systems, ensuring consistent and accurate colour reproduction across all outputs.
* Lead and mentor the APS 5 photographer, including task allocation, quality assurance and performance guidance.
* Undertake high-resolution imaging of works of art for the Gallery's online collection, publications, exhibitions and marketing purposes.
* Develop and maintain studio equipment, software, and workflow standards, including planning for future hardware and software acquisitions.
* Liaise with curators, conservators and other internal stakeholders to ensure imaging requirements are understood, scheduled and delivered to a high standard.
* Oversee the administration, tracking and safe handling of artworks entering and leaving the studio, ensuring accurate documentation and compliance with Gallery procedures.
* Ensure the safe handling and security of artworks and materials during the imaging process.
* Undertake other administrative and technical duties as required to support the Imaging section's operations
Eligibility
Citizenship – To be eligible for employment with the Gallery, you must be an Australian citizen.
Police Check – to be eligible for this role you must complete a police check.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION - Qualifications, Certifications and Registrations Role specific mandatory qualifications /certification and/or registrations include:
* Relevant qualifications in Photography or equivalent professional experience (minimum 5 years).
* Demonstrated experience in colour management workflows.
* High proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Bridge, Lightroom) and Capture One Pro.
* Experience with professional photographic equipment including medium-format and DSLR/mirrorless camera systems.
