Role Overview

Department of Critical Care Medicine (DCCM) at Royal Hobart Hospital is now recruiting Intensive Care Registrars for the 2027 year – 1 February 2027 – 7 February 2028. Applicants should be full‐time equivalent of post‐graduate year 4 or more in 2027. These day‐night shift positions are suitable for accredited trainees with CICM, ANZCA, ACEM, RACS or ACRRM, or any junior doctors who wish to gain experience assessing and managing critically ill patients.

Key Responsibilities

* Responsible for the day‐to‐day management of private and public inpatients and outpatients within the allocated site/facility.
* Provide after‐hours emergency care as determined by the relevant work unit.
* Work within the two 12‐bed pods, sharing a day‐night shift roster, supervised by Fellows/SRs/Consultants off‐site after hours.
* Participate in a robust time‐protected teaching program, including journal club, simulation and active bedside teaching during rounds.
* Contribute to safety and quality systems, including monthly mortality and morbidity meetings, the hospital Medical Emergency Response System, the hospital‐wide TPN Service and a 7‐day nurse‐lead ICU Liaison service.
* Manage a private ICU with CICM accreditation, predominantly peri‐operative casemix including cardiothoracic surgery and neurosurgery, on a combined roster across the two sites.

Selection Criteria

* Previous clinical experience in Intensive Care Medicine, Anaesthesia, and/or Emergency Medicine, including competence in relevant procedural skills.
* Successful completion of practical acute care and resuscitation courses, such as ALS, BASIC, APLS, EMST and formal Point‐of‐Care Ultrasound training.
* Accredited trainees with CICM, ANZCA, ACEM and/or ACRRM.
* Demonstrated experience in audit, research, teaching, and safety and quality.
* Demonstrated experience in leadership roles within or outside of work.
* A strong academic record and aptitude for advanced study.
* High‐level oral and written communication skills.
* The ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team.
* The ability to function well in stressful situations, and the readiness to adapt to different work environments.
* A respectful, caring and ethical approach to interactions with colleagues and patients.
* Acceptance and understanding of inclusion, diversity and equity in the workplace.

Essential Requirements

* Applicants must hold AHPRA registration as per the Essential Requirements within the Statement of Duties.
* General or limited registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
* Current Tasmanian Working with Children Registration, where applicable.
* Successful completion of pre‐employment checks: conviction checks for crimes of violence, sex‐related offences, serious drug offences and crimes involving dishonesty; disciplinary action checks in previous employment.

Employment Details

Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) Award, Medical Practitioner Level 5‐11 (Registrar/Senior Registrar).

Fixed term, full‐time day work, working 76 hours per fortnight (+10 hours protected training time per fortnight, pro rata), commencing 1 February 2027 until 7 February 2028.
