Technical Services at UTS support teaching, research, and operational excellence across science, engineering, health, and design disciplines. Dedicated technical teams manage laboratories, fieldwork logistics, and specialist facilities, while overseeing procurement, asset management, and compliance with safety protocols. They play a strategic role in enabling high-quality education and research through infrastructure support, risk management, and collaboration with internal stakeholders.
About the Role
The Technical Services Officer supports the operation of discipline‐specific laboratories, specialist facilities and field stations to enable safe and effective teaching, research and external engagement. The role provides hands‐on technical support and contributes to maintaining compliant, well‐prepared environments for academic and collaborative activities.
Role Responsibilities
* Support teaching by assisting with the planning, preparation and delivery of practical classes and field activities.
* Provide technical assistance during classes, research activities and fieldwork, including troubleshooting issues as they arise.
* Maintain, service and calibrate specialist laboratory and field equipment to ensure operational readiness.
* Support research and consultancy activities through equipment setup, inductions and routine technical assistance.
* Assist with procurement, storage and management of equipment, materials and consumables.
* Contribute to health, safety and compliance activities, including risk assessments, inspections and safety documentation.
Skills, attributes and knowledge
* Strong written and verbal communication skills for interaction with academic staff, students and technical teams.
* Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary technical environment.
* Effective planning and organisational skills to manage competing priorities.
* Problem‐solving skills with attention to detail in technical work and documentation.
* Ability to train and support others in the safe and effective use of equipment.
* Knowledge of laboratory or field‐based procedures relevant to the discipline area.
Experience
* Experience providing technical support for teaching and/or research activities.
* Practical experience operating, maintaining or calibrating specialised equipment.
* Experience applying work health and safety and risk management practices.
* Hands‐on technical experience in a laboratory or field environment.
* Machinist qualified operations experience desired.
Qualifications
Relevant degree or advanced diploma, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Refer to the position description for more detail.
Remuneration
Base Salary Range: $83,906 – $95,989 (HEW5) plus 17% superannuation (pension).
