The Role: Creative Leadership & Technical Excellence
As a Creature Supervisor, you will support the Head of Creatures in overseeing all aspects of hero character and creature work for the Film division. You are not just a manager; you are a master of the craft who can unite diverse talents—including modellers, riggers, and CFX artists—to achieve results that exceed client expectations.
* Project Supervision: Partner with VFX, CG, and Animation Supervisors to explore and execute the highest quality creature assets. You will translate client requirements into actionable technical specifications.
* Team Mentorship: Lead by example. You will review the work of artists, providing constructive, high-level artistic and technical feedback to ensure departmental standards are consistently met.
* Production Partnership: Collaborate with Producers to assess the feasibility of creature work, ensuring complex builds remain within budget and schedule constraints.
* Innovation & R&D: Work with the Head of Creatures to identify areas for improvement in our proprietary tools. You will investigate how emerging technologies, such as Machine Learning (ML), can streamline future workflows.
* Workflow Optimization: Define and refine show-specific approaches and creature template assets. You will maintain reference libraries and promote efficient data transfer between various tools in the asset pipeline.
* External Representation: Monitor industry trends globally and represent Framestore at interviews or industry events to promote our world-class creature work.
Requirements & Qualifications
We are looking for a seasoned leader with a deep technical "toolbox" and a refined artistic sensibility.
What We're Looking For
* Extensive Experience: A proven track record in a leadership role (Lead or Supervisor) within a high-end VFX film environment.
* Technical Versatility: Deep hands-on experience in at least two of the following specialties: Modelling, Texturing, Look Development, Rigging, or Creature FX (CFX).
* Management Prowess: Ability to manage large teams, meet production deadlines, and navigate the complexities of big-budget film schedules.
* Communication Skills: Exceptional interpersonal skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical challenges to non-technical stakeholders (directors/producers).
* Visionary Mindset: A proactive approach to initiating change and promoting new creative methodologies.
Bonus Skills
* Proficiency in Python or C++ for pipeline tool development.
* Expertise in Maya and a wide variety of DCC packages (Houdini, ZBrush, Mari).
* Familiarity with Machine Learning applications in creature simulation or facial performance.
* A background in traditional art, such as sculpture or anatomy.
