Job Type
Permanent Full‐time
The Role
In this role you will be involved in a wide range of design activities as you join our team developing innovative new products, operating in tightly regulated environments. Working closely with our quality, hardware and software teams you will contribute to the full product development lifecycle, driving innovation, conceptual development, detailed technical design, and preparation for manufacture. You will also share this knowledge with the organisation more broadly, mentoring junior engineers and designers, and striving to optimise our internal processes.
To Apply For This Role, You Must
* Submit a CV and portfolio presenting relevant product design work or engineering project experience (both visual and technical). Send this to careers@ingenuity-design.com.au.
* Be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or hold a valid working visa.
* Possess a relevant qualification from a reputable education organisation, such as:
* Bachelor of Industrial Design
* Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical, Mechatronic, Biomedical)
* Certificate IV in Industrial Design, Product Design or Engineering Design
Who We're Looking For
* A hands‐on, highly detail‐oriented designer/engineer who thrives on solving complex mechanical problems.
* Someone with a passion for good design who considers both form and function with equal attention to detail.
* Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a fast‐paced, collaborative consultancy environment.
* A proactive mindset with a strong sense of ownership and accountability for design outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
* Conduct technical research and interpret applicable standards and regulatory requirements.
* Translate clinical needs and user insights into clear design inputs and engineering requirements.
* Develop innovative mechanical solutions, particularly for miniaturised, flexible, or steerable systems.
* Create and iterate detailed product designs in 3D CAD, from concept through to production‐ready definition.
* Design and execute prototype builds, verification tests, and validation activities.
* Drive design for manufacturability, working closely with suppliers to optimise tooling and production processes; collaborate with cross‐functional teams, including electronics, software, and industrial design.
* Liaise with clients, clinical stakeholders, and suppliers to ensure alignment and technical feasibility.
* Produce complete, production‐ready documentation, including engineering drawings, specifications, and technical files.
Core Skills And Experience
* 5+ Years of product design experience.
* Experience creating design presentations and presenting to internal and external stakeholders.
* Design of complex assemblies involving tight tolerances, moving interfaces, and flexible elements (e.g., shafts, articulation mechanisms, cable‐driven systems, or compliant mechanisms).
* Proficiency in 3D CAD (SolidWorks preferred), including advanced surfacing, parametric modelling, and large assembly management.
* Integration of mechanical systems with electronics and/or embedded components, including cable routing, sealing, and packaging within constrained geometries.
* Experience generating and maintaining design documentation in a regulated environment, including drawings (GD&T), specifications, BOMs, and technical files.
* Exposure to regulatory pathways (FDA, TGA, CE Mark) and design controls within a QMS (ISO 9001/13485).
* Strong collaboration with manufacturers and suppliers, including prototyping vendors, toolmakers, and contract manufacturers.
* Excellent verbal and written English communication skills.
* Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Minimum Criteria
* Experience creating presentation renderings using software such as Keyshot or similar.
* Experience in the end‐to‐end development of miniaturised mechanical systems or steerable instruments.
* Design for fluid ingress protection, sealing strategies, and sterility requirements for medical environments.
* Familiarity with risk management processes (ISO 14971) and translating hazards into design controls.
* Development and execution of design verification testing (DVT), including fixture design, test method development, and data analysis.
* Detailed design of injection moulded plastic components, including knowledge of draft, shrinkage, tooling constraints, and material flow.
* Experience selecting and specifying biocompatible materials (e.g., medical‐grade polymers, elastomers, coatings), including understanding of ISO 10993 considerations.
* Experience developing single‐use or high‐volume disposable products, with strong understanding of Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA) principles.
* Experience with rapid prototyping techniques.
Accountabilities And Performance Goals
You will be accountable to the Ingenuity management team and our customers for:
* Performing your work and applying your skills to the highest standard in alignment with our quality management system.
* Delivering project milestones and tasks efficiently and in line with company and project budgets.
* Accurately capturing and accounting for work time to ensure timely billing.
And to Ingenuity and our teams for:
* Bringing a positive and "can do" attitude to work every day.
* Being an active and helpful participant in each team you form part of and seeing tasks through to completion.
* Learning and sharing new skills which benefit our colleagues and clients.
* Keeping our workplace safe and making it a positive and fun environment to work in.
