All Orbits, All Planets – Join us on our journey
Gilmour Space is the leading Australian rocket company, pioneering next-generation hybrid propulsion technologies for small satellite launch vehicles.
Are you a creative and experienced Avionics Engineer II looking for a dynamic role where your skills will make a real impact? Well now's your chance! We're building orbital launch vehicles in Australia — and avionics is at the centre of that effort. Power, compute, sensors, networks and control all must work together, under vibration, temperature extremes and real mission pressure. As an Avionics Engineer II, you'll be part of the team responsible for delivering flight‐ready avionics systems. You'll work across the full lifecycle — from early requirements and architecture through integration, verification, validation and operations.
This is a hands‐on role in a fast‐moving startup environment where engineers are trusted with real responsibility and real hardware.
Responsibilities
* Plan and execute verification and validation (V&V) activities at unit, subsystem and vehicle level
* Develop test procedures, conduct test campaigns and analyse results to close requirements
* Contribute to the development and delivery of avionics systems for Launch Vehicle programs
* Participate in requirements definition, architecture development, design reviews and system‐level decision making
* Support system integration of power, compute, sensors, actuators, communications and network subsystems
* Support environmental, functional and integration testing including troubleshooting and root cause investigation
* Act as Responsible Engineer for avionics units or subsystems where required
* Conduct trade studies, concept assessments and COTS evaluations to inform technical direction
* Support vehicle‐level integration, launch site operations and real‐time issue resolution
* Coordinate closely with Mechanical, Propulsion, GNC, Manufacturing and Production teams
* Engage with suppliers and subcontractors to ensure technical alignment and delivery
* Document engineering activities in accordance with company policies, plans and procedures
* Undertake junior leadership responsibilities and lead small product teams when applicable
Mandatory Qualifications, Skills and Experience
* Bachelor's Degree in Electronics, Computer Systems, Mechatronics Engineering or relevant qualification
* 2+ years of professional experience in avionics, embedded systems or related engineering environments (excluding internships)
* Experience supporting system integration, testing or verification activities
* Ability to operate effectively in dynamic, fast‐paced environments
* Demonstrated resilience and sound judgement in high‐pressure situations
* NV1 Security Clearance eligible preferred
Desired Qualifications, Skills and Experience
* PCB development of analogue, digital and mixed‐signal circuits
* Embedded software development (baremetal, RTOS, embedded Linux)
* FPGA/SoC hardware and software development
* Hands‐on electronics testing, debugging and integration
* Experience with avionics system integration and verification
* Electronics analysis including circuit simulation, power and thermal assessments
* RF systems including antenna design, link budgets, EMI/S‐parameter testing
* Experience in space, aerospace or automotive industries
* Familiarity with Systems Engineering practises and relevant space standards (GSFC-STD-7000A, SMC-S-016, RCC 319, DO-254, DO-178)
* Experience working within waterfall and/or agile development frameworks
