A fast-growing energy infrastructure and trading business is seeking a Senior Energy Trader to support the optimisation of energy storage assets within the Australian National Electricity Market (NEM).
This role will work closely with a broader Energy Markets team to develop and execute day-ahead and intraday trading strategies focused on maximising asset revenue performance. The position will also contribute to the development and enhancement of automated bidding and in-house trading tools in collaboration with analytics and technical teams.
The Role
Trading & Market Optimisation
* Monitor electricity spot market conditions and adjust trading strategies in real time
* Execute day-ahead and intraday optimisation strategies
* Support the development and refinement of automated bidding strategies
* Analyse market conditions, pricing behaviour, and operational constraints to identify trading opportunities
* Conduct back-testing and simulation analysis using historical market data
* Assess strategy robustness and identify opportunities for improvement
* Work closely with analytics and technical teams to improve trading systems and execution capabilities
* Contribute to the development of proprietary trading and optimisation tools
Market Analysis
* Interpret market trends, dispatch behavior, and price formation drivers
* Utilise internal and third-party analytical tools to support trading decisions
* Monitor risks and operational impacts affecting market outcomes
* Work collaboratively across trading, analytics, and operational teams
* Contribute to a high-performance trading environment focused on continuous improvement
* Support broader energy market and asset optimisation initiatives as required
Skills, Experience & Qualifications
* Experience in electricity trading, energy markets, or quantitative trading environments
* Strong understanding of spot market dynamics, dispatch processes, and price formation
* Experience developing and executing trading strategies in fast-paced operational environments
* Strong analytical capability with experience interpreting historical market data and testing trading strategies
* Ability to work effectively with technical and analytics teams to improve trading systems and automation
* Strong commercial judgement and decision-making capability
* Experience trading or optimising Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) or other flexible generation assets
* Familiarity with auto-bidding or algorithmic trading tools within electricity markets
* Experience using analytical tools such as Python, R, or SQL
* Understanding of FCAS and ancillary services markets
* Experience working within a real-time energy trading or market operations environment
