Canberra, ACT | Defence Industry Program | Long-Term Contract Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced Communications Engineer to join a high-profile Defence capability program supporting the evolution of complex communications and networking architectures that underpin critical mission outcomes.
This is not a traditional network operations or support role. Instead, you will work at the intersection of systems engineering, communications architecture, and Defence capability development, helping shape the future design of communications systems within a complex systems-of-systems environment.
Working alongside senior Defence stakeholders, engineers, and architects, you will contribute to the development of communications standards, architecture products, interoperability frameworks, and technical guidance supporting next‐generation Defence capabilities.
What You'll Be Doing
* Develop architecture views, design guidance, and standards relating to Wide Area Networks (WAN), routing, transport technologies, and communications systems
* Contribute to the design and evolution of complex communications architectures supporting large-scale integrated environments
* Analyse and assess routing protocols, network standards, SATCOM, and RF technologies to support interoperability and capability outcomes
* Produce architecture artefacts, technical documentation, and visualisations to support engineering decisions and stakeholder engagement
* Apply systems engineering and Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) principles to complex communications challenges
* Support integration planning, capability development activities, and enterprise‐level design initiatives
* Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across engineering, architecture, and capability development functions
* Contribute to technical briefings, governance activities, and senior stakeholder engagements within a Defence environment
Why This Role Stands Out
* Opportunity to influence future Defence communications and networking capabilities
* Work on complex systems-of-systems architectures rather than operational support activities
* Exposure to advanced communications technologies including WAN, SATCOM, RF, and interoperability frameworks
* Engage with senior Defence stakeholders and capability development teams
* Join a program delivering critical outcomes within Australia's Defence industry ecosystem
What We're Looking For
* Strong experience in communications engineering, network architecture, or systems engineering environments
* Deep understanding of WAN technologies, routing protocols, transport mechanisms, and communications standards
* Experience working with SATCOM, RF technologies, or related communications systems
* Ability to translate complex technical concepts into architecture views, standards, design guidance, and technical artefacts
* Experience applying systems engineering methodologies to large and complex environmentsExposure to architecture frameworks such as DoDAF, NAF, or similar structured modelling approaches
* Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills
* Experience operating within multi-stakeholder or highly regulated environments
Highly Desirable
* Defence, National Security, or Defence Industry experience
* Experience within C4ISR, communications, or systems integration programs
* Knowledge of NATO, coalition, or interoperability standards
* Experience with MBSE and architecture modelling tools
* Understanding of communications operations in contested, degraded, or constrained environments
* Experience supporting governance processes, technical reviews, and senior-level briefings
Security Requirements
Current NV1 Security Clearance is mandatory.
Candidates holding a higher clearance, including PV, are strongly encouraged to apply.
This is an outstanding opportunity for a Communications Engineer who enjoys solving complex technical challenges, influencing future capability outcomes, and working on some of Australia's most advanced communication and systems engineering programs.
