The opportunity
We're looking for an Associate Director to lead and grow our local government advisory work. This generalist consulting role requires leading projects across a range of service areas, often outside your technical background, and delivering high‐quality outcomes.
Typical project work includes
* Service and operational reviews
* Strategic and business planning
* Governance and organisational performance reviews
* Business case development and option analysis
* Policy and regulatory advisory
You'll lead engagements that
* Analyse service performance, costs, and delivery models
* Identify improvement opportunities through benchmarking and process review
* Design practical, implementable recommendations
* Engage stakeholders, from frontline staff to executive leadership and elected members
Our work is varied, team‐based, and delivered both on‐site and remotely.
What you'll be responsible for
* Lead and direct projects, setting priorities, aligning stakeholders, and ensuring delivery of high‐quality outcomes
* Apply structured problem‐solving to unfamiliar or complex service areas
* Build and maintain trusted client relationships, including at executive and governance levels
* Identify and win new work, contributing to the growth of the practice
* Bring together the right mix of skills and expertise to deliver outcomes
* Communicate clearly and confidently through reports, workshops, and presentations
This role requires someone who can combine strategic thinking, commercial judgement, and hands‐on delivery.
About you
You are an experienced consultant comfortable working across different domains and enjoy solving complex, ambiguous problems.
You will bring
* 10+ years' experience, ideally in consulting and/or local government
* Strong project leadership and structured problem‐solving skills
* Excellent written and verbal communication, including executive engagement
* Ability to work across diverse service areas and manage competing priorities
* A track record of building client relationships and winning work
