Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance (BHSI) has an exciting opportunity for an experienced underwriting professional to lead our Corporate Property portfolio across the Southern Region, based in Melbourne.
This role is accountable for the performance and profitability of the corporate property book of business, including the execution of a disciplined, CAT-driven underwriting strategy. You will help define underwriting appetite, shape distribution, and deliver against portfolio P&L objectives, while remaining actively involved in underwriting complex risks.
As a senior leader within our Property team, you will provide technical direction and underwriting authority, ensuring consistency, discipline, and excellence across the portfolio. With a strong focus on profitable, sustainable growth, you will balance new business opportunities with disciplined renewal management and exposure oversight. You will also lead and develop a high-performing team, fostering a collaborative, values-driven environment.

Duties & Responsibilities
* Own and grow the Southern Region Corporate Property portfolio, managing a book of business within BHSI risk appetite (including primary/excess layers, multi-year policies, and bespoke placements) with full accountability for portfolio P&L, profitability, and growth.
* Lead technical underwriting of complex property risks, acting as a key referral point and ensuring disciplined risk selection, pricing, and coverage design.
* Drive portfolio strategy and performance, including CAT aggregation, exposure management, and ongoing portfolio optimisation to deliver sustainable underwriting profit.
* Deliver profitable growth through market engagement, strengthening broker and customer relationships, securing new business, and maintaining a high-quality renewal portfolio.
* Demonstrate market leadership, acting as a credible ambassador for BHSI and clearly articulating our value proposition with professionalism and integrity.
* Lead and develop a high-performing underwriting team, building strong technical capability, accountability, and a collaborative, high-performance culture.
* Collaborate across the organisation with claims, actuarial, operations, and underwriting teams to enhance decision-making, portfolio insights, and customer outcomes.
* Ensure operational discipline and execution, maintaining high standards of governance, data quality, and underwriting practices in a fast-paced environment.
Qualifications, Skills & Experience
* Deep experience in corporate/commercial property underwriting, including complex risk assessment
* Proven track record of portfolio ownership and profitable portfolio management
* Demonstrated technical leadership and underwriting authority
* Strong people leadership experience, with a focus on coaching and capability development
* Established network or the experience and ability to develop strong broker and customer relationships quickly
* Excellent negotiation, influencing, and stakeholder management skills
* Strong analytical capability and commercial acumen
* Experience in policy wordings, manuscript coverage, and bespoke structuring
* Ability to operate both strategically and hands-on
