Significant opportunity to lead one of the largest Victorian community legal centres to help resolve people's legal & interconnected issues & ensure that laws and legal processes are fair.

The Position

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the CEO ensures SMLS operates effectively, manages its resources appropriately, operates within budget and upholds the reputation and function of an outstanding community legal centre with a close relationship with the Monash University Faculty of Law.

Core to the success of SMLS, the incoming CEO will encourage a workplace culture that values and pursues social justice and provides leadership in the development and delivery of a range of high-quality services to people in the community, using community development principles of empowerment and collaboration.

To be successful in this role you will embody the values of respect, community, excellence and courage and relish the opportunity to tackle wicked and complex problems. You will offer experience working at a senior level leading a team or project in service delivery. Your exceptional leadership and communication skills will be essential to inspiring the legal and non-legal workforce. You will be invigorated by building collaborative partnerships and representing the organisation confidently in external forums, including with government agencies and community stakeholders.

Experience in the community legal centre sector is desired but not essential.

The Organisation

South-East Monash Legal Service (SMLS) is a not-for-profit community legal centre based in the outer south-eastern suburbs of Melbourne, with sites in Springvale and Narre Warren.

SMLS work towards a fair and inclusive community where people can access the resources, networks and support they need to resolve legal issues and overcome barriers to social, cultural and economic inclusion and participation. As an organisation, SMLS are committed to help resolve people's legal and interconnected issues and ensure that laws and legal processes are fair.

Established in 1973, South-East Monash Legal Service ('SMLS') is a community legal centre that provides free legal advice, assistance, information and education to people experiencing disadvantage in community within the City of Greater Dandenong, the City of Casey and the Shire of Cardinia. The organisation employs approximately 59 staff and is supported by volunteers and pro bono contributors. The annual operating budget is approximately $7 million, primarily funded through government grants.
