About the Role

Commencing in January, 2027, The Head of Middle School is a key senior leadership position responsible for the overall educational, pastoral and operational leadership of students and staff across the important middle years, 7 and 8.

Reporting to the Deputy Principal, the Head of Middle School leads a dynamic team and learning environment that places student wellbeing, engagement and achievement at its centre. Working closely with staff, students and families, the successful candidate will foster a positive and inclusive culture, drive continuous improvement in teaching and learning, and ensure students are supported to thrive both academically and personally.

This role requires a highly visible and relational leader who can balance strategic thinking with day-to-day operational leadership, while maintaining a strong focus on student outcomes, staff development and community engagement.

Key Focus Areas

Educational Leadership

* Lead the delivery and continuous improvement of teaching and learning programs across Years 7 and 8.
* Support high-quality curriculum implementation aligned with the Australian Curriculum.
* Promote innovative and evidence-based teaching practices that enhance student engagement and achievement.
* Foster a culture of professional growth, collaboration and continuous improvement.
* Lead and oversee student wellbeing, behaviour management and pastoral care programs.
* Create a safe, inclusive and supportive learning environment where students feel connected and valued.
* Work collaboratively with staff, families and support services to respond to student needs.
* Support successful student transitions into and through Middle School.
* Provide leadership, mentoring and support to teaching and non-teaching staff.
* Build a positive, collaborative and high-performing team culture.
* Contribute to staff recruitment, induction, performance development and professional learning.
* Promote a culture of accountability, reflection and continuous improvement.
* Operational & Strategic Leadership
* Manage the day-to-day operations of the Middle School.
* Contribute to strategic planning and the achievement of school-wide goals and priorities.
* Oversee budget management, resource allocation and risk management within the Middle School.

Child Safety

Champion a strong child-safe culture and ensure compliance with all child safeguarding and mandatory reporting requirements.

Promote environments where children and young people feel safe, respected and empowered.

Essential Qualifications and Requirements

* Current teacher registration or eligibility for registration in Tasmania.
* Current Working with Vulnerable People Registration (or ability to obtain prior to commencement).
* Current National Police Check.
* Relevant tertiary teaching qualifications.
* Demonstrated experience in educational leadership within a school setting.
* Strong knowledge of contemporary teaching, learning and wellbeing practices.
* Experience leading and developing high-performing teams.
* Excellent communication, interpersonal and stakeholder engagement skills.
* Demonstrated ability to manage complex priorities and operational responsibilities.
* Commitment to child safety, wellbeing and inclusive education.
* Understanding of the Australian Curriculum and contemporary educational practice.
* Proven ability to build positive relationships with students, staff, families and the wider community.
* Strong organisational, strategic planning and decision-making skills.

Highly Desirable

* Experience leading a Middle School or equivalent educational setting.
* Experience in curriculum development and implementation.
* Experience managing budgets, resources and operational planning.
* Understanding of independent school environments and governance structures.
