Registrar – Emergency Department – Launceston General Hospital (ACEM ) – Department of Health, Tasmania
Overview
The Emergency Department is a 43‑bed unit that opened in 2012 with an annual attendance of 45,000 and a 30‑40% admission rate. It includes a fully supported ICU with ECMO capability, 24‑hour cardiac interventional angiography and provides high‑acuity, clinical diversity for registrars. Consultants supervise from 08:00 to midnight, seven days a week, with an on‑call service outside those hours.
Training & Mentorship
As an LGH ED Registrar you will receive:
- Personalised learning with close mentorship from the FACEM group covering ultrasound, paediatrics, retrieval, disaster medicine, international EM, wellness, simulation and medical leadership.
- ACEM accreditation for 24 months of emergency training, including paediatric logbook accreditation.
- Primary and fellowship exam preparation programme; 6‑month anaesthetics rotation and elective medical speciality rotations.
- 5 hours of paid, protected teaching time each week, with monthly paediatric teaching and simulation centre sessions.
The 2024 Tasmanian Medical Practitioners Agreement provides improved pay and conditions.

Appointment Details
Fixed‑term full‑time shift worker, up to 76 hours per fortnight, commencing 2 February 2026 until 1 February 2027.
You will receive 10 hours of paid, protected training time per fortnight, pro‑rata.
Salary
Medical Practitioner Level 5‑11: $134,930 – $189,005 per annum, pro‑rata + 12 % superannuation. Salary is in accordance with the Medical Practitioners Agreement 2022. Salary packaging includes living expenses up to $9,010 and meals & entertainment up to $2,650 per year.
Eligibility
Essential criteria:
- General or Limited registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
- Current Working with Children registration.
Desirable criteria:
- Evidence of advanced life support or equivalent emergency life support certification and up‑to‑date resuscitation skills.
- Engagement in a relevant training program (ACEM/FACCRM/EMC/EMD or equivalent).
