OSM Thome Australia is currently seeking an experienced Marine Chief Engineer to join our operations in Dampier on a full‐time basis.

OSM Thome is a leading marine manning agency providing highly skilled offshore and marine crew to vessels operating across Australia and New Zealand. We support a wide range of sectors, including oil and gas, commercial fishing, research, renewables and other specialist marine operations.

About the Role

The Chief Engineer is responsible for the safe, efficient and compliant operation of the vessel's engine room, machinery, technical systems and maintenance activities. Working closely with the Master and wider onboard team, the Chief Engineer leads the engineering department and ensures that all mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, fuel, power generation and auxiliary systems are maintained in accordance with vessel requirements, company procedures, flag state regulations and good seamanship practices.

The role includes overseeing planned and corrective maintenance, managing engineering personnel, monitoring machinery performance, maintaining spare parts and stores, ensuring accurate maintenance records are completed, and supporting safe vessel operations at all times. The Chief Engineer also plays a key role in safety management, defect reporting, technical troubleshooting, emergency response and ensuring the vessel remains operationally ready and compliant.

Duties and Responsibilities
* Understand, comply with and implement all relevant vessel documentation, company procedures, regulations, guidelines and safe working practices.
* Ensure all machinery, mechanical, electrical and auxiliary systems are operated, maintained and repaired in a safe, efficient and compliant manner.
* Lead and supervise the vessel's engineering department, including the planning, allocation and completion of maintenance and repair tasks.
* Monitor the performance and condition of all engine room machinery, propulsion systems, generators, pumps, fuel systems, hydraulic systems and associated equipment.
* Maintain the vessel's planned maintenance system, ensuring all work orders, inspections and records are completed accurately and on time.
* Report any defects, breakdowns, unsafe practices, incidents, near misses or technical concerns to the Master and arrange rectification where safe and practical.
* Inform the Master of bunker requirements and plan, supervise and record the receipt, storage, transfer and consumption of fuel, lubricants and other engineering stores.
* Ensure all applicable local, international and company requirements relating to pollution prevention are strictly followed, including the correct maintenance of the Oil Record Book.
* Maintain accurate records, manuals, drawings, certificates, forms and technical documentation for the engineering department.
* Manage engineering spare parts, tools, consumables and stores, ensuring sufficient stock levels are maintained for safe and reliable vessel operations.
* Support emergency response requirements, including fire, flooding, machinery failure, blackout, pollution response and other vessel emergency procedures.
* Work closely with the Master and wider vessel team to ensure the vessel remains operationally ready, compliant and maintained in accordance with good seamanship practices.
Skills and Experience
* Valid Chief Engineer Certificate of Competency, or equivalent qualification applicable to the vessel and flag state requirements.
* Relevant STCW certification and training, including valid Basic Safety Training.
* Valid seafarer medical certificate.
* Previous experience as a Chief Engineer, Second Engineer or senior engineering officer onboard commercial, offshore or specialist marine vessels.
* Strong knowledge of marine engines, propulsion systems, generators, electrical systems, pumps, hydraulics, fuel systems and auxiliary machinery.
* Experience using planned maintenance systems and maintaining accurate technical records.
* Sound understanding of pollution prevention requirements, including MARPOL obligations and Oil Record Book management.
* Strong leadership and supervision skills, with the ability to manage engineering personnel and coordinate maintenance activities.
* Ability to troubleshoot technical issues and respond effectively to machinery defects, breakdowns and operational concerns.
* Strong safety awareness, communication skills and ability to work closely with the Master and wider vessel team.
