About the Role
We're seeking a full-time Advanced Manufacturing Intern to join our team for a short-term research project (approx. 3 months) within our Advanced Manufacturing division.
You'll work alongside scientists and engineers on a project focused on imparting metallic coatings and electrical conductivity to polymer substrates using surface functionalisation and electroless plating techniques.
This role offers hands-on experience with cutting-edge micro- and nano-fabrication tools and exposure to state-of-the-art cleanroom facilities at WearOptimo, the Australian National Fabrication Facility (ANFF), and The University of Queensland.
This internship is ideal for a motivated PhD candidate or recent graduate seeking practical experience in materials processing, surface chemistry, and device integration in a real-world biomedical manufacturing environment.

What You'll Do
* Develop and optimise metallic coating processes on polymer substrates
* Conduct surface characterisation (SEM, AFM, FTIR, XPS) and electrical inspection to assess coating uniformity, quality and adhesion
* Maintain accurate experimental records and report results to the team for internal review.
* Collaborate across teams and research partners to achieve project milestones
* Follow safety, cleanroom protocols, and quality control protocols at WearOptimo and partner facilities
-----------------------------------
About You
* Currently enrolled in or recently completed a PhD in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Nanotechnology, or a related discipline.
* Demonstrated understanding of surface chemistry, thin film deposition, or materials characterisation techniques.
* Skilled in laboratory or research environments and comfortable with precision equipment
* Enthusiastic, curious, organised, and detail-oriented, with a genuine interest in advanced manufacturing or medical technology
* A strong communicator who enjoys collaborating in a multidisciplinary team
Desirable
* Experience with surface analysis tools (SEM, XPS) and electrical testing
* Prior exposure to cleanroom work
