Policy Manager - Innovation and Industry Policy

Sydney or Canberra - Hybrid (3 days in office)

The Tech Council of Australia (TCA) is the peak industry body for the Australian tech sector. Our 170+ members span startups, scaleups, Australian global companies and multinationals, making tech Australia's third-largest industry. We work closely with government, business and the wider community to support the ongoing creation, development and adoption of technology across every sector of the economy.

You'll join a high-calibre team of industry leaders, policy experts and community builders who are passionate about strengthening Australia's tech ecosystem and shaping the policies that underpin it, during an exciting time of growth for the TCA.

Mission of the Role

This role supports TCA's industry and innovation policy program which aims to shape the growth of Australia's technology sector. This role will support emerging technology policy such as artificial intelligence and quantum computing, lifting innovation and technology investment, and building the skilled workforce the industry needs to scale.

You will focus on questions that are actively shaping national policy, moving quickly across a broad portfolio and engaging members, government and industry leaders directly to get the settings right. This role is for someone who thrives picking up new issues fast and turning analysis into impact.

This role will suit someone with strong written and analytical skills, a flair for building relationships and communicating clearly, an interest in public policy, and curiosity about how technology is shaping Australia's economy, workforce and society.

Key Outcomes You'll Deliver

* Conduct research, draft briefs and reports, and consult with members and stakeholders on TCA's policy positions.
* Prepare submissions on key legislative and regulatory issues affecting the tech sector.
* Represent the TCA in public and private fora, conduct meetings and moderate discussions.
* Prepare colleagues for meetings with member companies, government agencies and other stakeholders.
* Provide support to TCA's policy committees.
* Contribute policy insights and thought leadership to board papers, reports and stakeholder briefings.

Our Ideal Candidate Will Have

* Qualifications in a relevant field such as law, economics, social sciences or public policy.
* 3+ years' experience in public policy, law, consulting, or within government or advocacy organisations.
* Experience conducting policy research, analysis or advocacy using structured problem solving methods.
* Familiarity with the economic and public policy environment, and the ability to get across unfamiliar issues quickly.
* An interest or background in technology policy areas such as emerging technology, innovation and investment, or skills and the workforce.
* Excellent writing, communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
* Strong visual design and presentation-building skills, with the ability to turn complex concepts into clear, compelling narratives is desirable.
