We deliver 28 key services such as childcare, waste collection, parks maintenance, libraries, community facilities and aquatic centres to over 380,000 residents.The roleCanterbury-Bankstown Council is seeking an experienced and qualified Lawyer to join our in-house Legal Services team. Reporting to the General Counsel, you will deliver high-quality legal services and strategic advice across a broad range of legal areas, including property, commercial, administrative, planning, environmental, civil and common law.In this pivotal role, you will manage complex legal matters and litigation independently while ensuring the organisation's compliance with legislative and regulatory requirements. You'll work collaboratively with senior leaders and external legal providers to manage risk and support Council's strategic direction.This is an exciting opportunity to contribute meaningfully to a diverse and evolving local government environment, where your legal expertise will help shape positive outcomes for the community.Duties will include but not be limited to:Provide timely, high-quality legal advice across a range of matters including property, commercial, administrative, planning, environmental, and civil law.Manage and advocate in litigation matters across multiple jurisdictions, including the Land and Environment Court, Local Court, District Court, Supreme Court, Court of Appeal, and NCAT.Ensure Council's compliance with legal, regulatory, and internal governance requirements, including WHS, the Local Government Act, and ICAC obligations.Conduct legal research, prepare legal documents and briefs, and manage legal precedents and records using Council's systems.Draft, review, and negotiate contracts, agreements, and other legal instruments to safeguard Council's interests.Collaborate with internal stakeholders and external legal providers to deliver legal services aligned with Council's strategic objectives.Monitor legal project progress and support reporting to ensure timelines, budgets, and quality standards are met.Provide support and mentorship to junior legal staff, paralegals, and secondees as required.Assist with general legal administration and record-keeping tasks to support overall team efficiency.For a full list of duties, clickHERE to review the position description.You will haveBachelor of Laws (LLB) or Juris Doctor (JD), with at least 3 years' post-admission experience and a current NSW practising certificate (restricted or unrestricted).Strong legal research, analytical, and problem-solving skills with the ability to provide practical, ethical legal advice.Demonstrated advocacy and litigation experience, including court appearances (preferably in the Land and Environment Court and Local Court).Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to engage effectively at all levels.Proven ability to apply customer service principles, EEO, WHS, and continuous improvement in a legal context.High level of integrity, professionalism, and ethical reasoning.Desirable but not essential skills include a NSW Driver's Licence, knowledge of local government, strong communication and organisational skills, court experience, and the ability to manage confidential matters and attend legal proceedings as required.The salary range for this opportunity starts at $111,988 (Grade I, Step 1) + 11.5% super.Salary is negotiable dependent on skills and experience.What's on offerAn Attractive Remuneration Package.Embrace a better work-life balance with our Accrued Time Off program, designed to prioritise your well-being and help you manage the balance between your personal and professional life.Contribute to making a positive impact on our community.An investment in your professional growth, fostering continuous learning and development opportunities.Access to our employee Health and Wellbeing Programs.For more information, please contact Emma Roberts (General Counsel) at You will need to submit your application via the 'Apply' button below and create a login using your email address and upload aResume; andCover Letter addressing the selection criteria within the position description and explaining your suitability for the role.CBCity is an equal opportunity employer committed to providing a working environment that embraces and values diversity and inclusion.
