Overview
Summary Description: Under direction of the school principal and special education supervisor, the special education teacher provides direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities and works in collaboration with the general education teacher. Monitors and evaluates outcomes for students with disabilities. Assists in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEP).
Responsibilities
* Provide direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities.
* Collaborate with the general education teacher to support student learning.
* Monitor and evaluate outcomes for students with disabilities.
* Assist in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEP).
* Attend school meetings, programs, and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by the Montgomery County Education Association agreement.
* Support behavioral interventions as required for students in identified schools or programs (behavioral management and nonviolent crisis interventions).
Job Specific Information
This position is a teacher leading a class of 2nd and 3rd grade students in a self-contained program with three to four paraprofessionals and a class size of 7–8.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
* Knowledge of the MCPS curriculum for the grade/content range, MCPS special education program.
* Thorough knowledge of IEP, learning theory, differentiated instruction, data collection, best instructional practices, research-based reading instruction, multicultural education, assessments.
* Thorough knowledge in methods of teaching elementary math if seeking an elementary position.
* Understanding of ESSA (2015), IDEA (2004), and state and federal policies related to special education.
* Ability to provide instructional support and adapt instructional programs and materials.
* Excellent communication skills; ability to work with students with disabilities, teachers, and parents/guardians.
* Knowledge of and ability to apply the six performance standards of MCPS Teacher Professional Growth System (TPGS).
Education, Training & Experience
* Bachelor's degree in special education from an accredited college or university.
* Fluent in learning theory, differentiated instruction, developmental reading, child development, applied behavior analysis, and assessment; student teaching in the area of exceptionality or two years of teaching experience at the appropriate level (elementary or secondary).
* Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience may be considered.
* Certification: Meets Maryland State Department of Education SPC I certification requirements for special education; certification in a content area is desirable.
