If you're a qualified mechanic who knows trailers inside and out and you're ready to plant roots somewhere that actually values your craft — this is the one to read carefully.
We're not looking for a fill-in. We want someone who's going to make this workshop their home, grow with the business, and be part of where Varley Transport is heading. If you're keen to build a genuine career, not just clock in and clock out, you'll fit right in.
Based at our South Guildford operations, you'll be working on a well-maintained fleet of semi-trailers and heavy commercial vehicles. You'll be hands‐on every day alongside a tight-knit team that takes pride in doing the job properly. There's real variety in the work, a culture that respects tradespeople, and genuine opportunities to step up as the business grows.
What you'll be doing
* Inspect, diagnose, repair, and maintain semi‐trailers and heavy commercial trailers to a high standard
* Carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) in line with manufacturer schedules and compliance requirements
* Identify and repair brake systems, suspension, axles, landing legs, coupling equipment, and electrical/lighting systems
* Perform roadworthy and safety inspections, ensuring the fleet is compliant and ready to roll
* Complete accurate and timely maintenance records and service documentation
* Diagnose and repair hydraulic and pneumatic systems including air brake circuits
* Liaise with the operations team to prioritise and schedule workshop work around fleet demands
* Identify opportunities to improve maintenance procedures and workshop efficiency
* Assist with breakdowns and mobile repairs as required
What you must bring
* Trade qualification in heavy vehicle, automotive, or diesel mechanics — this is non‐negotiable
* Solid hands‐on experience working on trailers, semi‐trailers, or heavy commercial vehicles
* Comprehensive knowledge of brake systems (air and hydraulic), suspension, and trailer electrical/lighting
* Ability to work independently and problem‐solve without needing hand‐holding
* A safety‐first mindset — you understand why getting it right matters
* Current Australian driver's licence (HR licence advantageous)
* Strong attention to detail and pride in the quality of your work
* A positive, team‐oriented attitude — we're a crew, not just a workforce
Great if you also have
* Experience with refrigerated trailers, B‐trains, or low‐loaders
* Forklift licence (LF or LO)
* Familiarity with NHVR compliance and Chain of Responsibility requirements
* Previous experience in a transport, logistics, or freight environment
* Welding or fabrication skills (a definite bonus)
Why you'll love it here
