Full-time (100%), fixed-term position for up to 3 years Base salary will be in the range $82,****** - $109,****** + 17% Superannuation (Academic Level A) Base salary will be in the range $114,****** - $136,****** + 17% Superannuation (Academic Level B) Australian citizenship is required to be considered for this position Based at our Based at our About This Opportunity We are seeking two Postdoctoral Research Fellows/Research Fellows in Human-Centred AI for Decision Support to join Professor Tim Miller's team.
The project focuses on scalable, AI-driven decision-making in collaboration with defence industry partners and an academic partner at the University of Melbourne.
One role focuses on machine learning for decision support systems, and the other on human factors/cognitive psychology in AI-based decision support.
You'll design and test AI-driven tools and run large-scale experiments.
This role offers research impact, external engagement, and optional teaching experience—an excellent opportunity to grow your research portfolio.
Key responsibilities will include: Research: Produce quality and impactful research in human-centered AI.
Publish outputs in high quality outlets in artificial intelligence or decision support.
Develop a coherent research program and an emerging research profile in human-centered artificial intelligence.
Work with the team and external domain experts in joint research projects and applications.
Supervision and Researcher Development: Contribute to the effective supervision of Honours and Higher Degree by Research students (as appropriate).
Citizenship and Service: Develop partnerships, demonstrate leadership through mentoring, engage in internal service roles and committees, perform administrative functions, provide support to colleagues, and uphold university values.

About You Completion or near completion of a PhD in human-centred AI, human factors/cognitive psychology for decision support, or closely related area.
Openness to working on defence-related projects, related to decision support in intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance.
Ability to start the position around February-March ****.
Criteria for Position in Machine Learning for Decision Support Systems: Evidence of peer-reviewed publications in reputed refereed journals/conferences in machine learning/artificial intelligence, especially for decision support, situation awareness, information seeking, etc.
Demonstrated experience in using machine learning, including for image processing.
Demonstrated software engineering/development abilities, and the use of tools for software engineering.
Criteria for Position in Human Factors/Cognitive Psychology in AI-Based Decision Support : Evidence of peer-reviewed publications in reputed refereed journals/conferences in human factors or cognitive science/psychology, especially as applied to AI decision support, situation awareness, information seeking, etc.
Demonstrated expertise in applying models of higher-order cognitive processing, such as decision making, situation awareness, information seeking, etc.
Demonstrated experience in designing and running large-scale human behavioural experiments.
The successful candidate may be required to complete a number of pre-employment checks, including: right to work in Australia, education check.
In addition, the following mandatory requirements apply: Australian Citizenship: It is a requirement of this position that the applicant is an Australian citizen.
AGSVA Clearance: It is a requirement of this position that the applicant is eligible and willing to apply for security clearances as required by the project activities.
You must maintain unrestricted work rights in Australia for the duration of this appointment to apply.
