Join a growing team with a genuine impact on preventing the spread of weapons of mass destruction.

The Australian Safeguards and Non-Proliferation Office (ASNO) is a specialist office within the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade that contributes directly to Australia’s foreign, security and regulatory priorities. We have built a reputation for non-proliferation excellence over more than 50 years through effective treaty implementation, robust domestic regulation and support for international and regional partners.

Australia’s nuclear safeguards system is entering a period of significant evolution. Emerging technologies, increasing international expectations and a changing nuclear landscape require experienced safeguards specialists who can apply deep technical expertise to complex verification and regulatory challenges.

In this role, you will contribute directly to Australia’s national security, international reputation and global non-proliferation objectives through the application of advanced nuclear safeguards expertise.

The Opportunity

We are seeking experienced nuclear safeguards specialists with a minimum of 7 years’ experience in the implementation of International Atomic Energy Agency nuclear safeguards through the IAEA, a national regulator, operator, research organisation or academia.

This is a rare opportunity to apply specialist safeguards expertise to complex and evolving nuclear verification challenges at a time of significant change in Australia’s nuclear landscape.

You will contribute to safeguards work of national and international significance — helping shape practical and credible approaches to nuclear verification, regulatory oversight and treaty implementation. Working closely with government, industry, technical experts and international partners, you will support Australia’s role as a trusted and technically capable non-proliferation partner.

The role may involve work across:

*
o development of safeguards approaches
o interpretation and implementation of IAEA safeguards obligations
o emerging safeguards and verification challenges
o nuclear material accountancy and reporting
o safeguards permits, compliance and verification
o inspections and international reporting activities

You will work alongside highly respected technical specialists and contribute to strengthening Australia’s domestic safeguards capability, international partnerships and long-term verification effectiveness.

The Role

Your key duties may include:

*
o Providing expert safeguards advice to government, industry and international stakeholders.
o Applying safeguards frameworks and IAEA requirements to complex regulatory and operational circumstances.
o Supporting or leading safeguards inspections, verification and reporting activities.
o Translating complex safeguards and technical requirements into clear and practical advice.
o Preparing high-quality briefs, reports and technical documentation for senior stakeholders.
o Supporting safeguards permits, compliance activities and regulatory decision-making.
o Assessing safeguards risks, including treaty compliance, security and reputational risks.
o Representing ASNO in domestic and international technical engagements.
Our Ideal Candidate

At ASNO, we value people who are motivated by purpose, comfortable in a highly specialised environment, and bring curiosity to complex and evolving challenges. We are committed to fostering an inclusive, respectful and high-performing workplace and support staff through ongoing learning and development opportunities.

You may also have the following skills and capabilities:

*
o Minimum 7 years’ experience in the implementation of IAEA safeguards in a regulatory, operational, research or international environment.
o Deep understanding of safeguards concepts, verification approaches and international non-proliferation frameworks.
o Strong judgement and professionalism when working with sensitive or high-consequence information.
o Strong analytical, writing and communication skills, including the ability to translate complex technical issues into practical advice.
o Demonstrated stakeholder engagement experience across government, industry and international partners.
o Ability to manage competing priorities and contribute effectively in a complex and evolving environment.

We recognise that candidates may not meet every capability listed and encourage applications from people who can demonstrate transferable skills, potential and a willingness to learn.
