Join a growing team with a genuine impact on preventing the spread of weapons of mass destruction.
The Australian Safeguards and Non-Proliferation Office (ASNO) is a respected voice in global non-proliferation. As a specialist office within the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, we are Australia's national authority for non-proliferation treaties and the domestic regulator responsible for their implementation.
Australia's nuclear security depends on people who can assess evolving threats and protect critical assets from both physical and cyber risks. In these roles, you will contribute to the regulatory oversight and threat assessment work that keeps nuclear and radioactive material secure.
The Opportunity
We are recruiting at both the APS 5 (Nuclear Security Officer) and APS 6 (Senior Nuclear Security Officer) levels. Both roles sit at the heart of Australia's nuclear security system, contributing to threat and risk assessments, physical protection and cyber security regulatory activities, and engagement with domestic and international security partners. The difference is one of responsibility and independence — APS 6 officers lead and advise with greater autonomy, while APS 5 officers contribute to defined activities under guidance.
No prior nuclear security experience is required. ASNO provides comprehensive training and real-world exposure to build your expertise from the ground up.
The Role
Your key duties may include:
*
o Supporting or leading threat and risk assessments across physical protection and cybersecurity for nuclear and radioactive material and facilities
o Contributing to regulatory compliance activities, including assessments of security plans against physical protection and cyber threat vectors
o Preparing briefs, talking points and correspondence on nuclear security policy, emerging threats and regulatory matters
o Engaging with domestic partners — including intelligence, law enforcement and critical infrastructure agencies — and international counterparts on nuclear security cooperation
o Supporting or leading technical analysis and whole-of-government coordination on nuclear security threats and vulnerabilities
Our Ideal Candidate
At ASNO, we value people who are motivated by purpose, thrive in a highly specialised environment, and bring curiosity to complex and evolving challenges. We are committed to fostering an inclusive, respectful and high-performing workplace and support staff through ongoing learning and development opportunities.
You may have one or more of the followings capabilities:
*
o Experience supporting or coordinating threat assessment, physical security, cybersecurity or regulatory compliance activities in a government, critical infrastructure or security environment
o Strong written and verbal communication skills, including preparing clear briefs and assessments for senior stakeholders
o Sound judgement when analysing threat information, assessing risk and escalating issues appropriately
o Professional engagement skills when working across government, industry and international security partners
o Interest in nuclear security, physical protection, cyber, threats or non-proliferation, and willingness to build technical knowledge over time
We recognise that candidates may not meet every capability listed and encourage applications from people who can demonstrate transferable skills, potential and a willingness to learn.
