Field Training Officer Salary and Benefits
* Annual base salary in Australia starts from $95,857 per annum.
* Base salary + additional allowances in Antarctica starts from $168,793 per annum.
* Employer superannuation contribution up to 15.4%.
* Recreation leave: 20 days per annum pro rata. Not available in Antarctica; paid out on return to Australia.
Senior Field Training Officer Salary and Benefits
* Annual base salary in Australia starts from $105,861 per annum.
* Base salary + additional allowances in Antarctica starts from $178,797 per annum.
* Employer superannuation contribution up to 15.4%.
* Recreation leave: 20 days per annum pro rata. Not available in Antarctica; paid out on return to Australia.
Field Training Officer Responsibilities
* Plan and deliver field training.
* Support teams in the field.
* Coordinate station search and rescue readiness.
* Serve as the sole FTO during winter (March–November) and assume SFTO responsibilities.
* Progress to SFTO duties or transition from a summer FTO to a winter SFTO position.
Senior Field Training Officer Responsibilities
* Lead planning, scheduling, and delivery of Antarctic and sub-Antarctic field training.
* Work independently or supervise a team of FTOs depending on station and season.
* Coordinate field safety and develop search and rescue capability at station level.
* Lead in summer deployments requiring technical expertise, leadership, and experience in remote alpine or polar environments.
* Oversee winter deployments, building experience for the demanding summer season; transition from summer FTO possible.
Field Training Officer Qualifications / Licences
* Significant experience (last 5 years) in outdoor guiding/leading with young people or adults in remote wilderness setting and:
o Relevant qualification in Outdoor Education (Certificate IV, Diploma of Outdoor Education [preferred], Bachelor of Education—Outdoor Education, or equivalent); and/or
o Adult Teaching qualification (e.g., Bachelor of Education—Graduate Diploma; TAE);
* Significant long‐serving experience (last 10 years) in guiding and leading in the outdoor sector, including adult guiding (preferably in adult training and instruction).
* Wilderness First Aid (WFA, PHEC) or equivalent/higher.
* Climbing qualification: single‐pitch climbing instructor and/or multi‐pitch climbing instructor (ACIA, PACI or other recognised authority) or equivalent.
* Driver's licence: current, unrestricted "C" class (manual) Australian driver's licence.
* Citizenship: Australian citizen required; non‐citizens considered only when no suitable Australian applicants, with priority to Australian residents with work rights and New Zealand citizens.
* Obtain prior to commencement: valid passport (expiry at least 6 months beyond intended stay in Antarctic or sub‐Antarctic).
* Required prior to deployment: Provide First Aid (HLTAID011) valid for at least 18 months beyond commencement; Provide Basic Emergency Life Support (HLTAID010) valid for at least 18 months; Provide CPR (HLTAID009) valid for at least 6 months.
Senior Field Training Officer Qualifications / Licences
* Significant experience (last 5 years) in outdoor guiding/leading with young people or adults in remote wilderness setting and:
o Relevant qualification in Outdoor Education (Certificate IV, Diploma of Outdoor Education [preferred], Bachelor of Education—Outdoor Education, or equivalent); and/or
o Adult Teaching qualification (e.g., Bachelor of Education—Graduate Diploma; TAE);

o Environmental awareness and minimal impact practice.
o General field skills (stoves, shelters, etc.).
o Field navigation using GPS.
o Communications (radios, satellite phones).
o Snow survival skills.
o Search and rescue (first response, operational coordination).
o Technical rope-work skills for steep/vertical slopes (rock, snow, ice).
o Glacial travel experience in Antarctic‐like conditions.
* Organisational ability and leadership experience supporting remote field expeditions.
* Ability to work as part of a team, in a multi‐skilled environment, to work autonomously and follow directives from SFTO and Station Leader.
Senior Field Training Officer Knowledge and Experience
* Instructional ability, including preparing presentations and delivering training in all of the following areas:
o Field trip planning including risk assessment.
o Group management, leadership theory and practice.
o Environmental awareness and minimal impact practice.
o General field skills (stoves, shelters, etc.).
o Field navigation using GPS.

* Computing skills, document writing and editing, and liaison with ICT services.
Special Note for SFTO Applicants
SFTO applicants should have experience in Antarctic operations or a comparable environment.
