Key Responsibilities

* Manage and plan drafting work (including work breakdown, cost and schedule estimates) and allocate appropriate work to members of the drafting team.
* Participate in system design and hardware requirements reviews, and establish the mechanical and drafting specific requirements for projects.
* Collaborate with project engineering staff to develop candidate solutions that meet customer requirements and present solutions during design reviews.
* Oversee mechanical modelling of equipment and develop detailed product drawings in accordance with the DEF(AUST) 5085 Standard.
* Manage the configuration control of project drawings and support the relevant Project System Technical Authority.
* Utilise design capture and analysis tools to enable design tasks to be completed in a timely manner.
* Conduct analysis in mechanics (statics and dynamics), vibration, acoustics, thermodynamics, heat transfer and fluid dynamics.
* Support the commercial manager and procurement team in identifying suitable suppliers and subcontractors, and assist in audits.
* Identify safety hazards and contribute to product safety engineering.
* Work with project engineering and production staff to optimise designs for manufacturability, repeatability, reliability and maintainability, incorporating Design For Manufacture and Assembly concepts.
* Create, maintain and change CAD designs, drawings and parts lists for electrical and mechanical parts and assemblies in accordance with company procedures.
* Support the integrity of the design by checking design artefacts, including documents and drawings created by self, subordinates and others.
* Identify non‐conformances with engineering drawings and parts lists and create Non Conformance reports.
* Participate in Health, Safety & Environment activities to maintain a safe and clean work environment.
* Support equipment integration and validation to ensure that the design meets its requirements.

Key Competency Requirements

* High proficiency in the CAD design program Solidworks and associated PDM configuration management tools.
* Strong understanding of raw material types, grades and specifications, including electroplated, chemically converted or painted processes.
* Deep knowledge of configuration management principles and proficiency in configuration management tools.
* Excellent computer literacy including Microsoft Excel and Word, with a strong understanding of file structures and databases.
* Knowledge of fabrication/manufacturing processes utilising DFMA principles.
* Proficiency in technical drafting with exceptional attention to detail, tolerance identification and visual communication of designs.

Highly Desirable Skills

* Experience in developing electrical drawings such as wiring diagrams, wiring lists and cable assemblies.
* Experience in developing electronic drawings such as circuit schematics or printed wiring board layouts.
* Experience presenting technical solutions during formal customer design reviews.
* Experience designing for naval or air environments, harsh environments such as salt atmosphere, shock and vibration, or using Solidworks FEA package.

Experience

* Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent).
* At least 7 years of experience as a Mechanical Engineer.
* Experience in mechanical engineering design and development, preferably within Defence, Aerospace and/or Sonar.
* Experience leading people and teams.
* Experience developing and reviewing mechanical engineering and drafting/CAD estimates for scope, schedule and budget.

Nationality Requirements

The successfully appointed candidate must be eligible to obtain and maintain a current Australian Defence Security Clearance to Negative Vetting Level 1 (NV1).
