Technology Development & Commercialisation Engineer - Mechanical or Chemical
Located in the Tonsley Innovation District, at 1414 Degrees we're transforming how the world uses and stores energy – making renewable energy reliable, affordable and accessible for industry.
Our proprietary silicon-based energy storage and hydrogen technologies help industries cut emissions and reduce costs while keeping production running smoothly:
* SiBrick - safely and efficiently stores renewable electricity as latent heat, ready for use on demand
* SiBox - delivers consistent, high-temperature heat to industrial processes and can be seamlessly retrofitted as a viable alternative to conventional energy sources
* SiPHyRTM - a groundbreaking methane pyrolysis reactor with integrated storage, producing low-emission hydrogen and solid carbon using renewable energy
We're looking for an enthusiastic Technology Development & Commercialisation Engineer driven by innovation and keen to make a lasting impact on industrial decarbonisation.
THE ROLE
Reporting to the Chief Operations Officer, you'll play a central role in supporting the technical, economic and commercial development of 1414 Degrees' technology portfolio, with an initial focus on SiPHyR and broader involvement across SiBox, Heat-as-a-Service models and other emerging business opportunities.
You'll be responsible for coordinating inputs from internal teams, external contributors, university partners, laboratories, commercial stakeholders and strategic partners, and turning these inputs into clear, defensible engineering and commercial outputs.
BE RESPONSIBLE FOR
* Lead development, validation and documentation of techno-economic and commercial assessment models for SiPHyR and related 1414 Degrees technologies.
* Integrate process performance, energy balances, thermal integration, CAPEX/OPEX, revenue streams and financial metrics into clear decision-support models.
* Perform sensitivity and scenario analysis across key technical and commercial drivers, including electricity tariffs, utilisation, conversion, carbon value, heat offtake and service pricing.
* Support assessment of commercial models, including Heat-as-a-Service, technology licensing, project development, pilot deployment and strategic partnerships.
* Undertake system-level analysis for sizing, component selection, integration and deployment configuration across SiPHyR, SiBox and related systems.
* Coordinate technical test campaigns, third-party analysis and interpretation of results, including carbon co‐product performance and potential commercial applications.
* Support pre‐feasibility studies, market analysis, regulatory review, go‐to‐market planning and commercialisation pathways across 1414 Degrees' portfolio.
* Manage assumptions registers, data rooms, documentation, milestone reviews and inputs from internal teams, external partners, laboratories and strategic collaborators.
This role requires someone who can lead the work rather than only contribute to it — someone comfortable moving between detailed engineering calculations, model development, laboratory data, commercial assumptions, partner engagement and executive-level reporting.
ABOUT YOU
You're curious, proactive, structured and excited to tackle big challenges in clean energy. You enjoy turning uncertain early‐stage technology data into clear models, decisions and commercial pathways. To thrive in this role, you'll bring:
* A degree in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering; higher qualifications, process modelling, techno‐economic analysis or experimental R&D experience highly valued
* 5+ years of relevant experience in areas such as fuels, energy conversion, thermal systems, process development, industrial decarbonisation, industrial heat or thermal storage
* Strong technical leadership skills and the ability to coordinate multidisciplinary workstreams
* Demonstrated ability to develop, use or manage techno‐economic, process, financial or engineering models
* Strong analytical capability, including mass and energy balances, process calculations, sensitivity analysis and scenario assessment
* Experience with CAPEX/OPEX estimation, levelised cost analysis, financial metrics, commercial feasibility studies or service-based commercial models would be highly regarded
* Proficiency in relevant engineering tools such as Excel, MATLAB, Python, CAD and/or CAE tools such as Inventor or Ansys
* A solid understanding of measurement systems, experimental data analysis and statistical interpretation
* Experience coordinating external testing, laboratories, consultants, universities or technical partners would be valuable
* Ability to interpret technical test data and translate it into design, modelling, commercial or market implications
* Strong document‐control discipline, including assumptions registers, model documentation, version control and structured reporting
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare clear technical reports, commercial summaries and management updates
* Confidence engaging with internal teams, external partners, commercial stakeholders and senior decision-makers
* A proactive, self‐motivated and results‐oriented mindset
HIGHLY REGARDED EXPERIENCE
* Methane pyrolysis, hydrogen production, carbon materials, thermal energy storage, industrial heat or high‐temperature process systems
* Techno‐economic analysis for early‐stage technologies
* Commercialisation of industrial technologies from R&D through pilot or demonstration stage
* Heat-as-a-Service, energy-as-a-service, project‐financed infrastructure or industrial energy service models
* Process scale‐up, modular system design, plant‐gate deployment studies or industrial heat integration
* Market assessment, go‐to‐market planning, regulatory review or investment case preparation
At 1414 Degrees, you'll join a team of people passionate about making a real‐world impact on industrial decarbonisation.
If you're ready to help shape the future of energy, we'd love to hear from you.
