Waste Cleaning Attendant
The Waste Attendant at Frankston Hospital is responsible for the safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible management of all hospital waste. This role ensures the proper collection, segregation, and disposal of waste in full compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations. By managing waste effectively, the Waste Attendant plays a critical role in maintaining a clean, safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors, while also supporting the hospital’s sustainability initiatives.
Compass Group Australia will deliver essential support services at Peninsula University Hospital, one of Victoria’s largest health infrastructure projects. We will provide vital services, including, cleaning and waste services, security, grounds and gardens and more. As a public hospital with clinical services provided by Peninsula Health, this facility will play a key role in supporting the community—be part of something bigger and help shape the future of healthcare in Victoria.
THE POSITION
- Collect, sort, and dispose of general, clinical, and hazardous waste in accordance with the Frankston Hospital Redevelopment protocols and regulatory requirements, ensuring safe and compliant waste management.
- Safely and efficiently operate waste compaction and disposal equipment to maintain a clean and hazard-free environment.
- Regularly empty, clean, and maintain waste bins, collection points, and disposal areas to prevent contamination and uphold hygiene standards.
- Conduct waste audits and support the identification of areas for improvement in waste management practices, ensuring compliance with hospital regulations and government standards.
- Periodically facilitate the weighing of waste to verify invoices.
- Cleaning of the waste rooms and ensuring orderly storage of the waste bins.
- Adhere to strict infection control procedures, including the safe handling and disposal of biohazardous and medical waste materials, to prevent the spread of infections.
- Contribute to the implementation of Frankston Hospital sustainability initiatives and waste reduction strategies, promoting responsible disposal and recycling practices.
- Facilitate the bin wash to clean and sanitise bins weekly.
- Coordinating the waste holding and carousel logistics.
- Clean and operate the carousel and chute system.
- Liaise with subcontractors around pickups and drop offs.
- Collaborate with hospital staff to educate and promote best practices for waste segregation, disposal, and environmental sustainability, fostering a culture of environmental responsibility across the hospital.
- Maintain accurate records of waste collection, disposal, and any incidents related to waste handling, ensuring accountability and supporting continuous improvement. Report issues such as equipment malfunctions or contamination risks to the supervisor.
- Work closely with clinical, cleaning, and facilities management teams to ensure productive waste management, helping to maintain smooth and uninterrupted hospital operations.
- Adhere to workplace health and safety policies, including the proper use of personal protective equipment, and actively participate in safety drills and training to ensure a safe working environment for all.
THE PERSON
- Previous experience in waste management, environmental services, or a similar role, preferably within a healthcare setting well regarded.
- Knowledge of waste handling practices.
- Valid Police Check and Working with Children Check (employee version), or willingness to obtain.
- Evidence of serology and immunisation history in compliance with Peninsula Health Care Worker Immunisation Policy.

- Ability to efficiently complete tasks within set schedules while maintaining compliance and high standards.
- Collaborative approach to working with other staff members, contributing to a safe and clean hospital environment.
