Offer description

The Role

* The Staff Specialist will provide specialist medical services to the Royal Hobart Hospital within the limits of specified clinical privileges and will undertake work within allocated clinical support portfolios that are aligned to the strategic priorities of the Trauma Service.
* The Staff Specialist reports to the Director of Trauma at the Royal Hobart Hospital and is expected to perform the duties allocated, consistent with organisational values, and will promote, role‑model and support those values in the workplace.
* Ensure consistent, safe, effective, evidence‑based and patient‑centred care to patients admitted under the RHH Trauma Service, including contributing to the administration, oversight and governance of the Trauma Service within the assigned portfolio of responsibilities which may also include rostering, leave planning, committee work and junior medical officer supervision.

Salary

Medical Practitioners (Public Sector) Award

A remuneration package comprising the Agreement base salary, relevant allowances and other entitlements will be negotiated with the successful applicant dependent on clinical experience and seniority.

Base salary points range for Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1 at $222,789 through to Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 11 at $305,539 with further salary increments available.

* Access to the Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner salary range $309,222 – $319,701 is subject to the successful applicant satisfying the criteria for Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1, 2 or 3 as outlined in the Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) Award.

Medical Practitioners Agreement 2025

* Allowance in lieu of motor vehicle currently set at $28,786 pro rata per annum, paid fortnightly (with CPI indexation on 1 July each year).
* Continuing Professional Development Allowance of $17,483 pro rata per annum.
* On call allowance % of Base Salary.
* Managerial Allowance.
* All other allowances as per current Award.
* Subject to approval from the Private Patient Scheme Committee (PPS), 35% of Base salary plus on‑call, pro rata, of additional payment will be paid from PPS. If not admitted to the PPS, a 35% in lieu of PPS of base salary will be paid.

Details of Appointment

Fixed term part‑time day work (with on‑call), working 38 hours per fortnight commencing 4 August 2026 for 36 months.


Essential Requirements

* Holds specialist registration; or
* Is a registered Medical Practitioner who is an International Medical Graduate (IMG) on the specialist pathway.
* Is a registered Medical Practitioner who is an International Medical Graduate (IMG) with a recognised overseas specialist qualification and is assessed as having sufficient experience in the speciality.


Pre‑employment Checks

* Conviction checks: crimes of violence, sex related offences, serious drug offences, crimes involving dishonesty, serious traffic offences.
* Identification check.
* Disciplinary action in previous employment check.


Desirable Requirements

* Significant clinical and operational experience as a practicing clinician in major trauma service.
* Experience in related fields including, but not limited to, retrieval medicine, major burns care, medical education (including simulation) and research.
