Drive Ecological and Social Impact with Biodiversity Australia

Are you a visionary ecologist with an unyielding drive to deliver transformative environmental and social outcomes? Do you thrive on tackling complex challenges, leading high-impact projects, and inspiring teams to achieve excellence? At Biodiversity Australia, a proudly Indigenous-owned consultancy, we’re seeking a Principal Ecologist who is not just an expert in their field but a thought leader ready to steer our growing business into new frontiers.

As we expand our ecological services across new geographies and sectors, we need a strategic, conscientious professional to manage key portfolios, drive innovation, and deliver world-class results. With a legacy of assessing over 40,000 hectares of Biodiversity Stewardship in NSW, our work is rooted in a deep commitment to environmental excellence and social responsibility, including empowering Indigenous communities and advancing reconciliation. If you’re passionate about making a tangible difference to Australia’s biodiversity while championing social impact, this is your opportunity to lead with purpose.

About the Role

As a Principal Ecologist, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the strategic direction of Biodiversity Australia. You’ll lead high-profile projects, manage cross-functional teams, and drive innovative ecological and social solutions with a balance of Biodiversity Development Assessment and Biodiversity Stewardship Assessment. This role is for someone who relishes the challenge of scaling a business while upholding our commitment to Indigenous ownership and community empowerment.

Key Responsibilities

- Lead and Innovate: Spearhead complex ecological assessments, biodiversity offset strategies, and conservation projects, including contributions to our landmark 40,000+ hectare Biodiversity Stewardship assessments in NSW, delivering outcomes that set industry benchmarks.
- Strategic Growth: Identify and develop new service offerings, expand into new geographies, and penetrate emerging sectors, aligning with our mission to drive environmental and social impact.
- Team Leadership: Manage and mentor a team of ecologists and environmental scientists, fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and cultural sensitivity.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, regulators, Indigenous communities, and other stakeholders, positioning Biodiversity Australia as a trusted leader in ecological and social outcomes.
- Thought Leadership: Represent the company at industry forums, contribute to policy development, and publish insights that advance ecology and Indigenous-led conservation.

About You

- Proven Expertise: A degree in Ecology, Environmental Science, or a related field (postgraduate qualifications highly regarded) and at least 7 years of experience in ecological consulting or conservation.
- Leadership Acumen: Demonstrated ability to manage teams, oversee complex projects, and drive business growth with a focus on quality, innovation, and social responsibility.
- Strategic Vision: A track record of identifying opportunities, developing new services, and expanding into new markets or sectors, ideally with experience in Indigenous-led initiatives.
- Conscientious Excellence: A meticulous approach to work, with a commitment to delivering outstanding results under tight deadlines and complex conditions.
- Cultural Sensitivity: Experience or a strong willingness to engage respectfully with Indigenous communities, aligning with our social objectives and Indigenous ownership.
- Communication Mastery: Exceptional interpersonal and written communication skills, with the ability to influence diverse stakeholders and inspire teams.
- Adaptability: Comfort working in diverse environments, from urban offices to remote field locations, with a willingness to travel as needed.

Why Join Biodiversity Australia?

- Lead with Purpose: Take ownership of high-stakes projects and shape the future of our business while advancing Indigenous empowerment and reconciliation.
- Innovate Freely: Work in an environment that encourages bold ideas and rewards creative problem-solving, with a focus on both ecological and social outcomes.
- Grow Your Career: Access professional development opportunities, industry networks, and the chance to take on increasing leadership responsibilities in a rapidly growing organization.
- Make a Lasting Impact: Contribute to conservation outcomes that protect Australia’s unique biodiversity and support Indigenous communities, building on our success with over 40,000 hectares of Biodiversity Stewardship assessments.
- Flexible Work: Enjoy hybrid or remote working arrangements, with the flexibility to balance your professional and personal life.
