Primary objective
The Senior Regulatory Policy Officer helps to build and implement a framework of strategies, systems, policies and procedures that
support regulatory excellence and ensures that regulatory activities are proportionate, accountable, consistent, targeted, and
transparent (PACTT).
Context statement
The Setting Division in the Department of Lands, Planning and Environment supports various statutory decision makers,
including the Northern Territory Environment Protection Authority (NT EPA), the Controller of Water Resources, the Chief
Executive and Minister to perform their statutory functions under the Territory’s environmental laws.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Conduct comprehensive research, analysis, and evaluation of regulatory frameworks and practices to ensure alignment with
departmental goals and legislative requirements.
2. Contribute evidence-based and strategic insights to enhance regulatory decision-making and compliance activities that adhere
to PACTT principles.
3. Collaborate with the Director of Regulatory Strategy and Maturity to facilitate cross-team coordination, fostering the
development of robust and consistent systems, policies and practices.
4. Craft high-level briefings for executive and ministerial audiences and regulatory policies and procedures for internal and
outward-facing audiences.
5. Contribute to projects within the Regulatory Excellence team, driving the accomplishment of Divisional objectives. This role
plays a pivotal part in delivering strategic actions aimed at elevating the maturity level of the environmental regulator in the
Northern Territory.

Selection criteria
Essential
1. Strong analytical and research skills applied to devise pragmatic solutions to tackle intricate and sensitive challenges.
2. Demonstrated experience in crafting and evaluating legislation, systems, policies, or procedures.
3. Demonstrated written communication skills, adept at simplifying complex concepts into easily understandable content suitable
for diverse audiences.
4. Demonstrated oral communication skills, characterised by clarity, attentive listening, and respectful interaction with others.
5. Demonstrated experience in project management and organisational prowess, adept at navigating multiple priorities and
deadlines to deliver outcomes efficiently.
