About the role
The Environment Specialist is responsible for designing, provisioning, and maintaining stable, secure, and reliable technology environments across the delivery lifecycle, ensuring they are fit for purpose and free from contention so teams can test and validate changes without risk or disruption. While the role does not handle production deployments or approvals, it plays a key part within the Customer Platforms team by collaborating closely with developers, QA, stakeholders, and technical teams to meet environment needs and support effective delivery.
Job Description
As an Environment Specialist, you will facilitate the creation and upkeep of technology environments that enable teams to deliver and validate products efficiently and safely.
Key Responsibilities
* Environment Ownership & Integrity
o Own the technical health and stability of all non-production and production environments.
o Ensure each environment is used strictly for its defined purpose.
o Enforce environment integrity by preventing unauthorised or unplanned changes.
o Define and maintain environment entry and exit criteria.
* Environment Provisioning & Maintenance
o Provision, configure, and maintain environments in line with architectural standards.
o Perform planned environment refreshes, upgrades, and patching.
o Ensure environment configurations are documented and current.
o Manage environment lifecycle activities including build, upgrade, and decommissioning.
* Environment Contention Prevention & Resolution
o Operate the environment booking and scheduling mechanism.
o Identify potential contention early and elevate to Release Management.
o Enforce environment freeze rules during active SIT, UAT, and EMR windows.
o Execute approved resolution actions following the Environment Contention Playbook.
* Access & Security Controls
o Manage role‐based access to environments.
o Ensure access is time‐bound, approved, and auditable.
o Restrict vendor access to approved environments only.
o Monitor and review access logs.
* Data & Configuration Management
o Manage environment data refreshes and masking in line with policy.
o Prevent unplanned data changes during booked testing periods.
o Maintain configuration consistency between environments where required.
* Monitoring, Incident & Problem Support
o Monitor environment availability and performance.
o Respond to environment‐related incidents.
o Support root cause analysis for environment instability or contention issues.
o Identify systemic issues and recommend improvements.
* Governance, Evidence & Reporting
o Maintain environment documentation and evidence for audit.
o Provide environment metrics including:
+ Contention events
+ Unplanned environment changes
+ Environment‐related release delays
o Support internal and external audits.
About You
You will have strong experience in maintaining stable and predictable environments with minimal unplanned outages, while reducing contention and avoiding release delays caused by environment issues. This is supported by clear enforcement of usage rules and change freezes, along with strong audit outcomes backed by proper evidence and traceability, enabling delivery teams to test confidently without interference, minimizing rework and ensuring smoother, more reliable delivery.
Knowledge And Experience
* Extensive experience as an Environment Specialist, preferably in Banking or Financial Services Industry.
* Strong experience managing complex application and infrastructure environments.
* Experience operating shared test environments (SIT, UAT, Pre‐Prod).
* Understanding of environment governance in regulated environments.
* Experience working closely with vendor platforms or products to deliver outcomes.
* Working knowledge of DevOps concepts and their application.
