MUST BE ENROLLED IN A PHD AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SYDNEY LAW SCHOOL

About the opportunity

The University of Sydney Law School is home to exceptional educators, world-renowned researchers, talented students, and esteemed practitioners, making it one of the top law schools globally. Our distinguished alumni further reflect our reputation for innovation and leadership. Ours is a vibrant, collegial, and supportive working environment.

We are currently recruiting from current HDR students who would like to be available as a Teaching Fellow to receive teaching work (such as tutoring, teaching, marking) in 2026, to commence in February. The Teaching Fellow roles have been named in honour of one of our longest serving academics – Ross Anderson – whose commitment to legal education has contributed to the thriving and dynamic educational environment of Sydney Law School.

Successful applicants will contribute to teaching and curriculum development in core areas of our Professional Law Programs (LLB/JD) curricula and areas of growing student interest in our Postgraduate Coursework Programs. We welcome applications from those with demonstrated capacity to teach into any part of our curricula, with a particular focus on our core curricula.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

* conduct and prepare for tutorials and other learning activities during semesters

* conduct marking

* respond to student enquiries

* undertake teaching-related administrative functions

* prepare online and/or in-person training modules or contributing to tutorial rewrites/updates.

The University of Sydney is recognised as one of the top research and teaching universities in the world. A globally ranked university, ranked 25th in QS University World Rankings 2026, 2nd for sustainability in Australia.

About you

The University values trust, accountability and excellence. As such, we see the importance of recruiting talented academics who align to these values and who will lead our teaching and research work at the university in the years to come. You will join a dynamic, engaged group in a highly collaborative and supportive teaching and research environment. We are looking for a Ross Anderson PhD Teaching Fellow who has:

* must be a current HDR student at the University of Sydney Law School

* must have received an Outstanding or Satisfactory rating on their most recent PEM to be considered

* students who are in periods of extension in their degree will not be eligible for appointment into one of these roles

* students who complete their HDR degree (by submitting their thesis) will be eligible to continue until the end of the year in which their thesis was submitted. After this point, the appointment will cease, and there is no commitment by the University of Sydney to continue the appointment in other forms.

Appointment to PhD Fellow positions:

* is limited to students currently enrolled as PhD students at the University;

* is subject to competitive merit-based selection based on the University's teaching expectations;

* is for a maximum of 3 years and for no less than 2 years; and

* is subject to prior discussion with their PhD supervisor

Please note that the success of any candidate for these roles depends on many factors beyond the applicant's abilities. Such factors may include the availability of other ongoing staff, student enrolment numbers, timetable concerns and so on. Meeting the criteria for becoming a Postgraduate Fellow does not imply that such an applicant will be appointed.

Work rights for Australia

You must have unrestricted work rights in Australia for the duration of this employment to be eligible to apply. Visa sponsorship is not available for this appointment.

Pre-employment checks

Your employment is conditional upon the completion of all role required pre-employment or background checks in terms satisfactory to the University. Similarly, your ongoing employment is conditional upon the satisfactory maintenance of all relevant clearances and background check requirements. If you do not meet these conditions, the University may take any necessary step, including the termination of your employment.
